  1. If I understand correctly what you're asking, the answer is "no problem" in either case. I switch back and forth from manual mode to Drive mode without much of a thought.

Hello gents. New to the legacy forums, but I've been with an 01 4eat RS for a few years and on the RS forums for a bit till I switched over to the 05 GT.

The Legacy GT is a completely different animal from the NA RS and I figured this would be a good place to ask. Is it a problem starting from a complete stop in manual mode and then switching to regular drive once you hit 5th? What if you're coasting at a point where 3rd is low enough on the RPM's and switching over to D?

Lastly, is switching to manual mode while in motion during regular driving a problem? I just wanted to make sure because about 20 or so pages back, some one mentioned to come to a stop before switching over and using google to search the forums didnt exactly render a satisfactory answer. Thanks.

  2. For the temperature control, not that I know of. It's automatic, period. The best we can do is tweek the temp controls to keep the car the temperature we want since it doesn't seem to hold a constant temperature inside. Very lame.

But for the rest, if you change a setting it takes that control out of automatic. For example, if you set the fan blower speed, then that's the speed and it doesn't change unless you go back to fill automatic.

I didn't read through this whole thread, since I am searching it while at work on my phone. But is there a button combination to turn off full auto /auto? I don't want my climate controls on auto but I can't find anything to turn it off. I have a2013 legacy. If it is in this thread please just let me know, I'll look through this later when I get home.

    Thanks

  3. You can shift with the steering wheel or the shifter.

True, they operate the same if the shifter is in S position. If the shifter is in D position and you use a button to shift, it will go back to D mode if you release the gas pedal then press it again (or something close to that).

  4. That's pretty much the range of temps here in the San Francisco Bay Area, with 100F being common as we drive East through the central valley in the summer. My point is that I've never even heard of a transmission cooler or anyone using or needing one here.

the coldest nights in my area in winter would be around 5-15 degrees Celsius, or 41-59 degrees Fahrenheit

I would say the temperature I would be driving around in would typically be from around 15C-30C, sometimes getting up to 40C in the summer (59F-86F, up to 104F).

  5. I don't really know the answer to your question, but I don't notice anything in my 2005 LGT auto when braking normally (in Drive). It doesn't noticeably downshift while braking.

    New owner of 05 5EAT.

How much downshifting should the car be doing when I hit the brakes (in normal street driving)? I am really noticing this (both engine noise and car motion), and wonder if this is normal or a sign of more tranny fun to come.

  6. >Brake pads are cheaper than a transmission<

That's of course a true statement, but it says nothing about whether using engine braking shortens the life of the transmission. I've seen or heard no evidence that it does. It's how I learned to drive a long time ago, I've done it with all my cars (which I've driven up to 280K miles), and have never had a transmission problem, auto or manual.

Brake pads are cheaper than a transmission. I could understand if you were going down a hill that was long/steep enough to cause significant brake fade / failure that downshifting to 1st might be necessary--I doubt that's the case though.
  7. Hear, hear! I do whatever I want with my 5EAT, especially downshifting for braking, no attempt at rev matching, with no problems at all. 135K+ miles.

    People, people, people!

It's an auto ffs, you have 2 jobs: hit the gas or hit the brake, depending on need.

Anything above and beyond that, if you want to dick around, get a MT

07-09 will revmatch on downshifts, 05-06 I have yet to hear of a failed transmission because it didn't like to be downshifted.

  8. I couldn't agree more. The HVAC is a very bad joke, made worse by Subaru seeming to either not care about or not notice the very bad reports about the system. Oh well, if that's all I can complain about, I guess that's pretty good. I still don't see a car/wagon I'd rather have.

Its Subaru's lame/rush attempt at an upmarket dual/auto climate control. Its a POS. These dual/automatic type of HVAC systems in cars have long been sorted out decades ago; with the MY05 Outback LTD XT, etc, SOA was chasing the upscale market. I recall our 1st dealer visit which was for the HVAC operation - the car was no more than two weeks old .... what a joke! Months later Subaru America changed out the HVAC/radio modual, and then again. POS.
  9. Sorry I'm late to the party. That price is by far the worst I've heard and I see no excuse for it. Why do you think dealerships are called stealerships here? The 60K (and 120K) service on a 2005 LGT is about $650 at LIC Motorsports (Subaru specialists) in Novato, California, a high-labor-cost area.

    ****** My 60,000 mile service IS COSTING $2400.00 *****

    how outlandish? very? not very??
