  1. My apologies , the vehicle is an automatic transmission. As for it turning it moves easily, the steering is not fighting you and what I'm calling a Vibration is not like tires skipping. It's like someone slightly putting a brake on the serpentine belt and thus it felt like it was loosing power under load. We had the same feeling once, oddly when the radiator sprung a big leak. We will go on a mountain drive today and I'll report back what we notice. I'm wondering if my word choice is sounding like differential symptoms when I may be trying to describe something else. Thank you for all the help, I'll see what we notice today.
  2. So today it is above freezing and the car hasn't made any Vibrations or whining sounds. The cold seems to make a lot of difference.
  3. The mileage is around 100k,is that the only thing it could be? That seems like quite a repair for so little mileage, is this common with the legacy? Is this a part that is replaced or is it a part needed rebuild/research? Thank you

  5. Hi all, So this winter we have and 08 legacy that we have recently started noticing a vibration/ pulse while turning. It feels like the vehicle is strained under load and the cold seems to make it more pronounced. The first thing I did was check power steering and toped that off. Front suspension arms and tires are all new as of this summer and the vehicle has been aligned. There is a bit of a whiring/ whining sound that I assume to be steering pump related, it only happens when steering. These symptoms are the same when turning left or right, it just seems to be straining and turning the wheel feels like there is more tension to do so. I have tired googling these symptoms and unfortunately most of what comes up is suspension related. What should I be looking for next and does this sound like I am on the right track? Thank you for any advice on this.
  6. once we swapped the relay, the compressor was on and off. its definitely not blowing as cold as it should be, but with the relays swapped it is currently running. I'm not really sure if its a fluke or if the relay has something to do with it. We bought some freon refill to see if that helps get it cold again. The relay that I swapped is to one of the fans, will this fan only come on at high temp or do the fans run constantly? I need to see if its working so I know if its a bum relay that we just swapped to the fan.
  7. ok so I didnt tap the relay, but I swapped it with one next to it. The ac compressor is intermittently on and off and not very long in between, with the swapped in relay. It does blow cold when the compressor is running. Does that sound like a bad relay?
  8. Out of the blue as spring hits full swing, our AC stopped pumping cold air. It blows ambient temp. I had a spare can of freon to try, but when I hooked it up to the vehicle its in the red instantly. After some light digging I read this is because the AC is not on, and sure enough the clutch to the pump is not spinning. I had fans on max and the climate control as cold as it would go. My question is what can I do now to further diagnose this issue? Also can the 08 compressor clutch be replace alone or does it require a new AC pump? Thank you for any help you can give, its an 1hr 20 to work and Im starting to cook in the car haha.
  9. I do mean the tie rod end where the castle nut attaches. I can move the tie rod joint by hand when its removed from the knuckle. Its not sloppy by any means, but I cant move the end back/forth without to much effort.
  10. The tire doesnt seem to feel grippy as you say, its actually quite smooth except where the portion of tire that got to the belt is. It looks like the inner wheel might be bent a little, same spot that this patch is. Ide post a picture if this has free imaging hosting. A question about the tie rods, how much play can there be. They weren't flopping around, but you could move them by hand and they felt like they wanted to return to the previous position a little. Is it acceptable to be able to move them by hand or should they take some force?
  11. Hello all, So we have had a vibration that is showing up in an 08 legacy and this pretty much starts at 80mph. We had thought this a tire balancing issue so we took it in for a balance yesterday. We got a call with them saying its not the balancing thats an issue. The showed us the drivers tire and the dang thing had the inner edge wore down to the belt, passenger tire was fine. They put the car up on the rack and said an almost 4000$ quoted bill would be the result of the front control arm bushing starting to crack, the flat hockey puck one, and the steering rack was leaking. I'm not an expert here but the bushings were dropped all the way from the suspension hanging so there were some little cracks noticeable but it didnt seem terrible. The steering rack was leaking into the tie rod boot, its not enough to drip yet, but it was wet and I could only trace it up to the top of the steering rack. I assume its the little connector thats leaking. Also I saw the driver side lower ball joint boot had a tad bit of grease coming out of it, but I dont know if this is an excess purge thing or a very small tear? I did not see this on the passenger ball joint. Needless to say we arent having them fixing this and I have to bushings to push out from the controls arms, then the plan is to get new tires and an alignment right away. My question is am I overlooking anything else that could allow this terrible tire wear? I pressed and pulled on everything as best I could while i was underneath the car, we pried the bushing with a pry bar to see flex, they do move. Thank you for any help you can give!!!!!!
  12. Hey guys, I'm trying to think of ideas on how to fix the dash of this 08 legacy. Its was a florida vehicle and i dont know if the sun cooked the crap out of the dash or a P.o. wipped something on it, but its top half to the window is sticky, more stick the closer it gets to the window. Have you all had this happend and is there any way to resolve this other than replacing the dash? I was thinking maybe to tape everything off and roll on a thick layer of plasti dip type coating, or something similar, any thoughts on what you all would do/ have done? thank you for any ideas!
  13. the shaft was replaced and the vibration was solved. We bought a cheapo shaft off amazon and it seems to be good enough for now.
  14. just posting to follow up, we replaced the driver side axle shaft that had a torn boot, the tare was 10mm in the summer and grew over time so we knew about it, but this also solved the vibration at idle issue!
  15. I'm a bit uneducated on these motor mounts, wouldn't these vibrate all the time, neutral or not? The axle seems easy enough to replace, not sure how to tell if either are stock but at least one isn't, they have different boots. This all became noticeable after the vehicle was taken in for an oil change. It might just coincidental, the level was fine and I've since done another oil change myself. Can engine mounts be checked? Is it just a visual inspection? The Cv shaft have small in an out play, enough you can make it click by pushing the shaft in/out, but they have no other play by hand.
  16. The vehicle is 73000 miles. This vibration can be well felt in the vehicle and in the steering wheel. As i said, turning the wheel at a stop seems to put on a load and the vibration will stop say if your holding left or right, the same goes for neutral. It has only recently started say 6 month's ago. I have heard aftermarket cv shafts can cause vibration, but why all of a sudden?
  17. Hi guys, The 08 legacy has a bad vibe at idle, turning the wheel and putting it in neutral changes this. How do I go about diagnosing whats causing this?
  18. We haven't fixed the issue, it has only happened twice on very long road trips 10hr+
  19. Can an accurate self alignment be done on these vehicles ir is that out of the question and it needs the machine? I worry about taking it in as the bolts look crusty underneath, ide hope a shop would really do the work.
  20. Yeah, still working on identifying the engine thing unless it a cv thing. The tires we just learned of this excessive wear on all 4 after removing them to clean much off that was causing a vibration issue at 60mph,which solved that problem. Are the rear Subaru joints adjustable? It all looked fixed to me, this is why I asked if maybe the other owner had bad alignment that was eating tires. Im in CO and to the road crowning comment yes they do, I'll assume thats aids is the light right pulling, it doesn't worry me, but the tires are pretty bad and understandably we would want to put new ones on if the suspension is causing wear.
  21. On all four tires the inner ridge of the tire is worn flat. This vehicle has had a few owners and I know nothing of its history. What on these isf Subarus would cause all the tires to wear like this, or could've another owner swapped front tires to the rear because of a bad alignment chewing them up? Driving the vehicle tracks straight, but slightly goes right eventually, I understand proper alignment should do so for safety sake. What can we check that may be causing these tires to be destroyed?
  22. I need some help understanding/diagnosing the C.F. shafts. This vehicle has had 3 owners and the front shafts aren't stock. The driver side outer boot has a 1" split starting and is throwing grease. Both sides have in/out play on the between boots, and very little back and forth play, but enough to make metalic noise. No clicking, popping or whining noise is notice while driving. The rear cv have no play at all. Is this normal to have some movement in these front shafts? Thank you in advance for your input.
  23. Ok knock on wood, but the car started acting fine the next day???? The knob is turning fine. Is there anything that could be vacuum related. I'm stumped how one minute its broken and over night it works.
