I am struggling trying to figure out what the heck is going on with my 2006 Legacy with the standard 2.5L engine.
For about a year I was getting P0420 (Cat System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1) and P0171 (System Too Lean Bank 1) codes - but no issues with how the car ran. Then about two months ago I got P0304 Cylinder 4 misfire code, pulled the the plugs and at 182K miles it appears the original owner never replaced (nub on spark plug was non-existent or barely there). Changed out plugs with new Champions and all codes went away and the car ran great for about a month.
A few weeks ago the performance went down the tubes and it started bucking, misfiring and making exhaust vibration sounds at higher rpm. I replaced the plug wires, PCV and valve cover gaskets (tube seals had oil in them). Fired up car and still ran like crap and almost could not drive it around the block.
Focusing on the misfire I pulled all plugs and noticed that the J part of the cylinder 4 plug was pushed up against the nub and it has carbon built up on it. The previous plugs did not have this issue so I re-gapped. Car idled well again until I took it up the road and then turned to crap. Got a misfire on cyclinder 2 and 4, pulled the plugs again but they looked fine gap wise (carbon built up on them). Also realized that when I can back the second catayltic converter was glowing bright red.
I checked for spark at the plugs for cylinders 2 and 4 and that looks good. Also put a scope up to each injector and they are sounding good with continuous clicking. I can't swap coils as this is a coil pack (not individual).
I am at a lose on what to check now and direction to take. Not sure if Cats are bad or not or if there is something else causing issues. Latest DCM reads don't pick up any CAT errors. As of now, getting code P0304, two ABS codes (C0110 and C0140) plus a U1221 and U1223. I think the ABS and the U1221 are probably related and a side issue perhaps.
Appreciate the help ahead of time!
