  1. Hello all, My 2009 Legacy 2.5I has leaking externally head gaskets on the used motor I put on, so I decided I might as well refresh the engine that I have pulled out of the vehicle. As far as I know the block is good except heads may have some valve damage, engine was pulled and replaced because it was thought that the Tensioner bolted into the block and not a bracket that is the moment I wish I'd done more research more jumping on it. The head gaskets were already done on this motor, so I'm assuming the heads were already machined and I'm assuming there is a limit to how much they can be machined. I did manage to get a free engine with heads and intake etc off of craigslist off an Impreza as the block had rod knock, The heads are good and valves look fine, the heads on this motor have around 74k miles, the ones I managed to get free have 119k and were never touched so which ones would you use? I am also planning on replacing the head bolts as they as well have been most likely reused and I don't feel comfortable reusing them a third time. Obviously getting the heads off the Impreza EJ rebuilt would be cheaper at around $300 for valve seals etc while if there is damage on the original heads it would cost me up of 400+ for both heads. Also back then I did turn the engine backwards as I was stupid and did not know that usually can cause damage to an engine, can any damage occur from spinning these engines by hand backwards? Finally, I do plan on getting a gasket kit from Subaru to replace all the seals and gaskets. Around my area dealers are wanting up to almost $380 for a gasket kit is there any cheaper place to score these for cheaper? I do want to use the MLS OEM subaru gaskets so is this the correct part number? 11044AA770 I'm also going to use the Aisin kit for the timing belts as I've used it before on my Impreza. I believe I've covered everything I wanted to in this post, is there any other advice you would suggest? I've already done head gaskets on my 09 Impreza and used felpro but this time I wanted to use oem as this is my daily.
  2. I don't believe you can disable the Immobilizer, I know many people though glue on the black chip that is in the chipped key somewhere near the key so it can read it. Then any key will be able to start it as the chip will always be in the vehicle.
  3. I have a 09 Legacy, Front end collision occurred when my brother n law owned this car, had the bumper repainted hood was not repainted. Bumper paint was horribly painted where the paint is just chipping off especially when power washing it. So at this point instead of repainting it I'm just looking for a used one same color to match the rest of the paint's age. Color is Deep Bronze Metallic couldn't find any near me located in Spokane Washington.
  4. Thank you all for the help, here is a picture of the dented pan. https://imgur.com/a/isHNxdt Sometime this year or whenever I feel like doing it I will replace the pan from the old engine.
  5. Hello all, I have a 2009 Legacy that I had swapped the Engine with, it turns out that oil pan had a dent in it. At some point I do want to replace it as I think the gasket is leaking anyways, but I have run the engine for 4k+ miles and have not had any issues. Is there anything to be concerned about it being dented? Oil level etc seems to be fine.
  6. Thank you all for your help, I'll keep an eye on it and hope it's just the oil pan which honestly seems like it at the moment.
  7. So, here is a few more photos, https://imgur.com/a/tcrIOP1 Yes this is a 2.5 and I recently did do head gaskets on my Impreza back in spring so it shouldn't be that hard to do again if needed. What are you thoughts on these photos? these should be a bit more helpful hopefully. Right side of the engine is clean, and head is also dry.
  8. Hello all, I have a 2009 Legacy, doing control arms at the moment and noticed that the underneath of my legacy is soaked in oil, Engine oil pan, rack, a bit of the front diff, and Left head. Now this is a used engine I installed back in 2020 and it apparently has around 60k miles on it. It doesn't seem to be loosing coolant nor much oil after driving 3k miles on this engine. It's not a car I drive much everyday. It does seem like that the head gaskets are original and the head is only soaked on the bottom area of the head not on the sides. Here is a picture of underneath the head. https://imgur.com/qFs4FZa I'll clean up the underneath and monitor it when I change my oil next.
  9. Well, I went ahead and checked it again, smells like gear oil but has a tint of red. Could just be me though, still probably wouldn't hurt to change it out in the future. Though if it were to be leaking inside the trans is this something I should be concerned about or no?
  10. Hello all, This is something that I've been wondering, from reading all the posts it seems like the front diff is supposed to have 75W-90 gear oil in it. My legacy on the other hand seems to have ATF in it's front diff, now I had the vehicle given to me by my brother n law so not exactly sure if it was replaced by him or not but he didn't drive it much. It drives perfectly fine with no issues, no noises other than lower control arms knocking, shifting fine etc. Should this be any concern?
  11. I acquired a Subaru Impreza 09 a few months ago from my brother n law for free. though it needed new valves due to a timing belt failure and head gaskets. About two months ago I fixed it up and the light has been on even before the timing belt failure, the Impreza drives perfectly other than Rpms around 740 though my O ring is destroyed on my MAF sensor. I do have 3 other daily vehicles I use but as I have my 2 sisters soon learning to drive I rather have a perfect vehicle for them, now the codes I have are C0042, C0057, C0071. My first thought would be to check all the grounds and connectors, could someone please give me a diagram of all the grounds to the VDC system? I'm assuming the C0042 code is causing the other 2 codes as It's a power loss code. Battery is only 2 months old and battery charging is around 14.2, Is there anyway to reset the traction control codes without a fancy scan tool? I was able to get these codes trough the vehicles diagnostics.
  12. Hello all, About 6 months ago I've acquired a legacy and impreza both with open airbag recalls, how long are recalls available for? The legacy was hit before so it's apparently considered a rebuilt title but would that prevent me from getting the recall on the legacy or no? That was in 2013 and the recall was in 2014, no airbags were deployed during that accident.
  13. No rust on the vehicle at all which shouldn't make this job to difficult. I do have some PB blaster and a grinder I'll use if I really have to.
  14. As far as I could see from just a visual inspection, no torn boots, and ball joints seem okay, I might just give the links or swaybar bushings a shot as they don't seem to be expensive. The car has only 74k miles on it though has been sitting for a year before I swapped a engine into it. All tires were replaced before the car was parked, tires were put on dec 2019, I checked once a month to make sure they haven't gone flat.
  15. Hello all, I have n/a Ej25 that was pulled from a 09 legacy that had bent valves, I have gotten those heads rebuilt and torque procedure went well until I went accidentally more than 45 degrees all the way to 50 tightening on one of the outer bolts, I went ahead and loosened it approx 9 degrees with a torque wrench. Anyhting to be concerened about slightly messing up this step?
  16. Hello all, 09 Legacy, I have had this pop for a few months now, whenever turning right or sometimes going bumps I have a Pop sound that sometimes sounds like someone just hit the car with a sledgehammer and I can feel it in the floor of the vehicle, a while back I did jack the car up and checked for free play none at all, sway bar links don't seem to be torn or have any play in them same with the strut mounts. I'm confused on where to go from here.
  17. Hello all, I have a quick question about the angle steps, I read that you have to loosen the bolts 180 degrees, is a angle torque wrench able to tell you when it has loosened 180 or no?
  18. Hello all, 2009 Legacy 2.5 Non Turbo owner here, was driving on the freeway - 60 MPH all of a sudden I hear a scraping sound, couldn't see anything under the wheel only happened around 30 or more MPH. once I got home I looked under the car, found a loose wheel liner by the bumper with it being chewed up a little. Anyone ever had this happen to them? thinking of just zip tieing it back to the bumper but who knows how long that will last since it already was zip tied and only lasted a month.
  19. 09 legacy, thinking I may run it 60k miles then replace it, tight on money right now.
  20. Hello all, New subie owner here, got a free Subaru a month or two ago with a dead engine, before installing the used engine I decided to change out the belt only. Very stupid of me only to change out the belts, was my first timing job ever. Now my main question how long do the pulleys last? Engine supposedly has 50k - 60k miles on it and could still see the Subaru writing on the old belt, One of the pulleys had a tiny bit of noise from I believe. would these at least last another 80k miles?
  21. Hello all, recently did a Engine swap in my 09 legacy. decided to take it out on the road drove for about an hour to two hours perfectly smoothly when all of a sudden it just revved and slowly slowed down. drove for about 1 to 2 minutes before pulling off the road was driving at about 30 MPH, popped the hood and there was ATF all over the place looked at the oil cooler line and it had cords showing out of the hose. What are the chances of a blown transmission from this happening? going to be repairing the hose tom in a parking lot, my Christmas is going to be fun...
  22. Swapped over an engine into my legacy 2 days ago, got the car running everything assembled ran for almost an hour idle and no issues, no codes, idles smoothly. went on the test drive accelerating then releasing the gas pedal triggered the code and a traction control light but the car still drove great even with the code on and idled, No codes while idling. what gives faulty sensor or a oil pressure switch?
  23. Thank you all for the responses, I decided to go with the coolant that I posted above which is the same color as the one that was in the vehicle just for the piece of mind.
  24. did an engine swap in my 09 Legacy, confused with what Coolant to use. Green coolant came out of my engine when I was draining it, Do I use green or blue? If its green, would this one work? https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/peak-original-equipment-technology-asian-green-50-50-antifreeze-coolant-1-gallon-pagb53/11979619-p?c3ch=PLA&c3nid=11979619-P
  25. Looking for an engine replacement for my 2009 Legacy, have a blown block I have found an engine that may fit for my 2009 Legacy but I just want to make sure that it will fit 100% https://www.ebay.com/itm/06-07-08-09-2010-SUBARU-LEGACY-OUTBACK-FORESTER-RS-2-5L-ENGINE-JDM-EJ25-EJ25DE/254781183119?hash=item3b5224548f:g:gs8AAOSwrhNckUK4
