My latest, rather large round of mods

Recommended Posts

So back in February I had one of my Megan Racing coilovers explode on a busy highway at 60mph. here is a link with pics if you are interested.

After this I was done with the coilovers and Megan Racing products and I needed a solution. It was not really that bad because I was pretty sick of the Megans anyway, they were awful for ride quality, noise, build quality, and over all experience with them. Every moderate bump caused the suspension to crash harshly and send a shock through the car comparable to hitting a pothole and bending a rim on stock suspension. They were gonna come off in the spring anyway. The car also had some other issues such and a broken front end link and brakes were shot.

First thing that needed to be done was get my self some new coilovers and after talking to a friend and reading reviews I decided on Stance GR+ being as that is the only model they make for the Legacy. I dealt with the company directly and made some changes to an already great product. First of all I really wanted helper springs, they are not gonna be a huge change in handling, but will help with comfort. Next the spring rates were not really to my liking Being 6K front and 6K rear, The Megans had 6K front and 8K rear and I did like the feel at the limits, so after talking it over I had decided on 7K front and 8K rears. Earl at Touge Factory really came through for me with a great price, getting my customized order ready, and shipped fast.

Next I need brakes as mine were done for and after looking at multiple sites I decided Stainless braided lines, DBA rotors, and Hawk HPS pads and the best deal I found was from RavSpec on this forum, he was one of the best Vendors I have ever dealt with, he went above and beyond to get me the parts ASAP. Here is his thread http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63683

I also went with RaliTek HD front end links, A.V.O. RSB mount reinforcement, and I had a pair of Cusco rear end links lying around that I never installed that went on the car as well. Summer is now here and the winter tires needed to come off and my local tire guy got me a set of Dunlop Deizza Z1 Star Specs filled with nitrogen

After getting all this installed the car is a new animal, have not gotten this car anywhere near its limits yet, nor do I plan on doing it on the streets when its safer and totally legal at an autocross. I can tell you so far that this setup is amazing, The Stance coilovers are like night and day difference from the Megans. The car handles on rails now and to my surprise the ride quality has drastically improved as well. Where the Megans would loudly crash and send a jolt through out the car, the Stances give a firm but not overly harsh dampening.

The Brake upgrade I went with was DBA 4000 rotors, Technafit lines, and Hawk HPS pads, and Super Blue Fluid. The car really stops on a dime now and the rotors look sweet as well. The tires are mounted on a set of STi BBS painted time attack style, I love the look of a 225/45/17 on the STI wheels the sidewall looks really aggressive. I will get some pics up by Monday. I am just so happy with the way the car has turned out, it really has become the civilized track car that serves as a daily driver.

So you are using helper spring all around??

No our rear struts are too short to accommodate them and I think the mounting does not allow for the rear Camber plates, probably why they only do this model .

Sounds like a nice setup. I really like my dba's & z1's also.

What's the purpose/benefit of filling the tyres with nitrogen?

It is for weight savings

Just kidding, it does not expand like regular air and doesnt leak out as quickly as air too. It really is not worth it unless it is on a dedicated set of track tires but it was free so whatever.

The more I drive the car the more i like the new mods, I have yet to get the car in rain with the Z1's but i expect them to do well.

Do you have a link to more info on the new coilovers for those of us who can only daydream?

Here is the link to the Stance website.

If you want more real world info on them just do a search on nasioc.com the impreza guys seem to really love them.

sounds like a good choice of mods :) Let me know how you like the star specs.

So far I really like them, tons of grip and the noise level is low. I have probably put 300 miles on them so far, so they may still be in the break in state, I did manage to get them to squeal just a little bit today.

Here is a pic I took today, sorry its a pic from an iPhone
