10. (1) No person shall sell or offer for sale a daytime running light system that does not conform to the requirements of the Canadian Standards Association Standard CAN/CSA-D603-88, Daytime Running Light Systems. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 587, s. 10 (1).

(2) For the purpose of subsection (1), a daytime running light system means a group of electrical components including the control unit designed for installation on a motor vehicle to automatically activate lights used to improve the conspicuity of the vehicle viewed from the front at all times other than when headlights are required. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 587, s. 10 (2).

Yeah, I don't know why anyone would ever actually want DRL's.

That and TPMS. I have a piece of black tape over the TPMS light on my 09.

I guess they call them idiot lights for a reason...

4 flats (all from screws) all caught by TPMS before needing to change the tire. I'm a believer.

Gee how did mankind make it thru the 70's and 80's...

To be honest, about a month ago my GF's daughter had one of her BF's cars. I told her the right rear tire was low on air, from the wear marks on the side wall, it had been low for some time.

He's been in Afghanistan since last Aug, so can't blame him. He's in the motorpool so I think he'd have a clue.

Because you're 11% safer with DRLs on then without. Common you're educated. There is a reason they're considered a safety feature.

Alright, I'm educated enough to know that random statistics don't mean squat. I would love to see the study where you got that number. I am sure that may be somewhat true if the study's sample size counts all the idiots in the general public. Unfortunately these are the same idiots that don't think to turn on their lights at night because of DRL's so they are driving around without tail lights.

I'm good about turning on my lights in low visibility situations and frankly there are times I don't want my lights on.

The Canadian government ran their own testing but hey try google.

Aurora, H., et al.: Effectiveness of daytime running lights in Canada. TP 12298 (E). Transport Canada, Ottawa, 1994.

In a study in Canada comparing 1990 model year vehicles (required to have DRLs) with 1989 vehicles, a statistically significant 11-percent reduction in daytime multiple-vehicle crashes other than rear-end impacts was estimated. This estimate was adjusted to take into account the fact that about 29 percent of 1989 vehicles were fitted with DRLs. Collisions involving pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists, and heavy trucks and buses were not included in this study.

Sparks, G. A., et al.: The effects of daytime running lights on crashes between two vehicles in Saskatchewan: a study of a government fleet. Accid Anal. Prev 25: 619-625 (1991).

In another Canadian study, crashes of vehicles with and without DRLs in a government fleet in Saskatchewan were compared with a random sample of crashes involving vehciles without DRLs. The estimated reduction in daytime two-vehicle crashes was 15 percent. When the analysis was limited to two-vehicle collisions most likely to be affected by DRLs--involving vehicles approaching from the front or side--the estimated reduction was 28 percent.

Love combating ignorance :)

FYI - automakers have been encouraged to have an 'auto' on headlight systems to help with stupid people too. That said I can at least see a car at night with DRL's on. I rarely rear end cars on the road, but when I do, it's because they have no tail lights on. :)
