KartRacerBoy
I've been an on and off fisherman in my 50+ yrs. Haven't really fly fished for 20 or so years, so I thought I'd reach out to see how many Subie bretheren are into this hobby. I live in South Bend, IN, just south of Michigan, so I have access to some good steelhead and salmon fishing, but I think this year I'm going to restrict myself to small stream trout fishing with my old 8' 4 weight line rod. Just got a new reel and flyline today. Season starts the last week of April in Michigan so I've got a few weeks to get ready. Any folks in my area or other areas want to chat? Moderators BarManBean Posted April 1, 2013 Moderators Share Posted April 1, 2013 Was up in PA this past weekend and they opened up their trout season--saw a bunch of spin fishers but nobody fly casting (I wasn't fishing, just driving around). Also noticed a pretty big mayfly hatch going on, really small (maybe 18s) and I'm sure that none of the stocked fish keyed in on them anyway so who cares. Hoping to do some shad fishing next weekend--will update if that actually happens. KartRacerBoy
i have been fly fishing for about 10 years here in colorado also. The only way to fish. I went to school at CU in Boulder in 1980/81 b4 tranferring back east to NE. I envy the areas steams and the ability to cast without trees over every stream. I can rollcast like a sumbitch, though. And Michigan streams are much like the east so this skill will come in handy.
bdisco
Never been fly fishing but want to learn. Used to fish all the time when I was a kid then life happened. We just bought a lake house http://www.websterlakeassociation.org/ as a summer vacation/retirement spot/investment. Hope to start fishing a lot more now. LLBean? Bass Pro? Orvis$$? What kind of set up would I need for the lake?
KartRacerBoy
Don't go with Orvis if you want to money for anything else. Great stuff but super $$$. Are you talking about fly fishing the lake?
bdisco
Yes, the lake fish would still hit a fly right? I've got a few spin cast rods and reels but want to try my hand at fly fishing. Think early morning, misty fog with the sun just coming up...

Pick up a redington rod / reel combo, 6 weight is probably good. Great bang for you buck. Try some poppers on the surface and some wooly buggers in black/brown/olive, and some crystal buggers in chartreuse. You'll catch loads! mbcracken
Been fly fishing for about 10 years now...I live in a great area with easy access to a great little river within walking distance. The local rivers are all coastal river systems but I'm an hours drive from Eastern WA for great trout blue ribbon fishing. About 4 years I finally hooked into my first steelhead...holy crap are those guys fun. Mrs also enjoys fly fishing but needs to be warm out. My youngest daughter caught her first trout on a fly rod at he age of 8. She has an August birthday and ever since then she always wants to go fly fishing with me on her birthday. :-) I don't do lake fly fishing because I really like the sensation of standing in the river while throwing a line acros the water to see what I can get to rise. If I'm lucky, it'll take a sip on my fly...if I'm really lucky, it'll bite it... :-) I've got about 5-6 setups now with varying levels of costs and really enjoy taking first timers out so they can feel the tug of a fish on the other end. I've got a small fly tying station filled with fluff and stuff...sometimes I can tie something I'm willing to put on my tippet. I'll try and post up some pics later... For the most part I'm with you on this. I've always liked wading and I'm happiest when I'm waste-deep in a current. Lake fishing doesn't always compare to reading a river and figuring out the little secrets and where fish might be holding. I'm especially fond of tailwaters on the bottom side of hydro dams. KartRacerBoy
bdisco, what you want to flyfish a lake will depend on the fish you're going for. BMB's advice for a 6 weight rod/line combo sounds good. How the fish you target eat will determine what sort of 6 weight line you buy. Are they surface feeders? Floating line. Are they 5-10 ft down? Either a floating line with a sinking tip or a pure sinking fly line. I clicked your lake link but didn't see where it was in Massacusetts. I've been to some eastern Mass lakes that had plenty of trout in them. Lakes so clear you could see 20' down. I imagine this won't be yours if it has houses on it, but they're still might be trout along with those small mouths.
mbcracken
I do a lot of fishing below the Snoqualmie Falls where there is also a hydro power plant. Too bad there is no fishing within 1/4 mile of that...but then it would be too easy. WA State does have the most convoluted fishing laws in the world. When you all are really bored...check out the regs here... http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/ You'll notice that not only is there the regulations but also "emergency" updates...ugh. Michigan might give WA a run for its money, with 6 different variety of lakes and 4 different variety of streams (or vice versa), each with different seasons and limits. I took a quick glance at MI...kind of confusing. Have a look at page 13 of this PDF. http://wdfw.wa.gov/publications/01384/wdfw01384.pdf It'll show all the different unique river or lake indicator numbers to use on your catch record. Each one of different areas has unique set if rules and regs for each different fish and species of fish. I've met several folks that have given up fishing WA because of the regs and those enforce it. To simplify my enjoyment of fishing...I mostly do c&r and always fish barbless. Fishing gets really fun when you have a 10-15lbs steelhead on with a 6lbs tippet. Cheers, Mike
bdisco
In early April, our Central District will be allotted 70 broodstock salmon from the Roger Reed hatchery in Palmer. The 2-year-old salmon, averaging 18 inches in length and weighing about 2 1/2 pounds will be stocked in Webster Lake, Lake Quinsigamond, and Comet Pond. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&gs_rn=8&gs_ri=psy-ab&pq=webster+ma&cp=12&gs_id=k&xhr=t&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&biw=1147&bih=560&wrapid=tljp136518356798408&q=webster+lake+ma&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x89e418b845f4ce97:0x3594b37f60d8af6d,Lake+Chaubunagungamaug&gl=us&sa=X&ei=TwxfUc7AGse-0QHI_oBo&sqi=2&ved=0CKYBELYD

But there's gotta be way more in that lake than 70 salmon Also, good luck catching stocked salmon on the fly in a lake. Best bet for lake salmon / trout fishing is during the early spring and fall. You can fish streamers near the surface quite often then and have good luck. KartRacerBoy
Just got back taking my 9 yr old daughter to the best local steelhead spot. It's just below a 20 ft high concrete dam. Lucked into a frenzy of 2+ ft steelhead leaping up at the dam for about 5-10 minutes. Then we hiked the stream (didn't fish) for an hour or so. She didn't want to leave and now wants to try stream fishing. Thank you Mr. Steelhead! She thinks that's the coolest nature moment she's ever had. I rarely saw him fish anything larger than a size 26 hook using a half or one lb tippet leader (I think). Of course, a big fish in the CT streams he used to fish was 15", but hooking such a fish with such a tiny fish and then playing it to shore without ripping it out of the soft tissue. He no longer fishes. He's 85 and recently asked my mother who she was when they woke up in bed together. He won't be fishing again, I'm sure. mbcracken
Have you guys read "The River Y"? Great read if you've missed it. Hunting chromes is addicting...my family enjoys the few I do bring home. My last one I brought home was 32". :-). One local guy landed and released this last winter a 18 lbs steelhead. Fought him for an hour. A couple years back my youngest daughter and I did an over night backpacking trip to a small alpine lake at about 4000". This lake is impossible to fish without a tube...so we sat on the shore throwing in black ants and watching them get eaten up by the trout. She will be 12 this summer and is already asking where we are going fishing and backpacking this summer Cheers, Mike
Brady
Now that ski season is finished and the rest of my spring travel is up I'm starting to head to the rivers around Colorado a little. My sister lives about an hour from Denver in the mountains with a guest room (practically an apartment) in the basement, so it's nice to crash there and be that much closer to the action in the morning. Too bad there's so much private water in Colorado though.
