SpecBFan
I picked up my new to me car today. I love this car!! It is even better then I thought it would be. I will be posting pictures soon but its a completely stock QSM 08 Spec B. I found it with 87,500 miles and paid 14,200 for it. It has a couple minor scratches that I will be able to buff out and the interior could use some armor-all. I will be modding it as soon as figure out where to start. I have some big goals that I will try to meet with this with in the next year or two. I would like to see around 300-350 at the wheels. I have been reading a lot of your post on what to do but I am always up for some ideas. Im thinking of starting with the AP and then getting a catted DP after that. When should I think about replacing the timing belt? I think its around 100,000 but I will look a little more for that.
Fitz
Welcome to the forum, I would pop your timing cover and check the belt right now as its with in that fine window to be changed. I would also check if u have the car history and see when the spark plugs were last changed as there a PITA to do but well worth a sound running B. Anyways check the belt, if it looks worn, cracking or u can see the teeth ribs showing threw the top of the belt probably time.... I would at least u know its been done Enjoy

Whenever modding a car, especially on power, you want to make sure that all the maintenance is up to snuff. So before doing anything here is a laundry list of things to do. Also post up the compression test numbers that I'm sure you had done when you bought it. Timing Belt Kit- You are close enough to 100k miles, should do the timing belt service now. 90k service- Used car, you have no idea if the 60k was done (60k/90k are the same except the 60k includes plugs, 90k doesn't) I would do a full 60k service (here is what we do for 60k service http://azpinstalls.com/index.php/maintenance/60k-mile-service ) LCA Bushings- most likely shot at that mileage Wheel Bearings- if they haven't been done, check em out Once that stuff is done, only then should you think about modding it. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. lee07
Congrats, you could go another year on the timing belt if you wish. Do a compression test first before you mod Mods, at least get better pads first then power

Max Capacity
Read the last line in my sig. Keep the oil level topped off. SpecBFan
Thank you for the advise. I plan on doing a major tune up first and trying to get everything so I know what is in the car and when it was done. No guessing should help to reduce the chance of a surprise. The guy did mention that the oil levels staid up there between oil changes. He could of been lying but we will find out. One thing I think I will work on after that is the suspension. I feel this car could hug the road a bit better. Maybe Pink springs and Sway bars but Im not sure which ones yet.
Max Capacity
Do the sway bars first when it comes time for suspension. Do you have a lap top ? If your good with it, you can save some cash and get the Trex cable and get a E-Tune from you of the tuners here. Hint cryo. You may want to clean the MAF sensor too. it's simple. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. SpecBFan
I have a buddy that is a computer programmer and he has the Trex cable for his car which is a 09 WRX. He said he would do a E-Tune if i found one or he could just do a tune for me. I think I would rather have a tune that someone has been running. Maybe an adjusted stock tune or mild mods would be good for now. What are some good sway bar to go with? I have always like Cusco since thats what I ran in my 2.5RS but they are a bit more expensive then others. I dont mind paying they are that much better but why pay more when there are comparable ones cheaper IE Whiteline or Perrin.
AZP Installs
We really like the Whiteline Sways. I would also suggest going with a set of Konis to replace your struts, well worth the $. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Nothing against your friend, but I've seen some of these "oh my friend tuned it" tunes and yea, scary.
Max Capacity
I agree with Nrw, you don't want someone elses tune. Every car is a little different. A Tuner can ride along with you while you drive and make the needed adjustment. Your lucky enough to live in a area that has a lot of great Tuners. My wagon has been on the Dyno at ESP in Sterling MA, with my Tuner and has been street tuned a few times with him. You can "get by" with the same tune your friend has...but when you think about what it may cost you in the long run... it's much better to spend the cash up front. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. SpecBFan
What about Infamous E-Tunes? I may not have the time to go get a tune done yet. I would like to just get a stock tune to make things smoother and more reliable .
Nrw
Tunes don't take that long to do, especially if you're doing a stage1/2 tune. Doing a E-Tune will take longer to complete since you'll be emailing back and forth with the tuner, and depending on the tuner that may take a while. Max Capacity
FWIW, IMO your much better off with one of the great local Tuners. Trust Nrw and I on that. You don't need a Dyno tune just a street tune. My Tuner is 1/8 mile off exit 65 on Rt84. We street tune both my cars on rt84 on Sunday mornings, when I feel the need or make changes. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). AZP Installs
The biggest issue with street tunes I have is the liability issue. The tuner doesn't carry any insurance, which means your insurance is responsible if he kills someone while doing "pulls". Then your insurance is going to turn around and say that you were not using the vehicle properly/legally and they will weasel out of paying. This means whoever gets hurt or killed ends up suing the car owner for YOUR house and YOUR wages. Not a spot I would want to be in. -Mike Paisan http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/91072632.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/145749898/original.jpg http://www.pbase.com/paisan/image/133406601.jpg http://www.whiteline.com.au/images/logos/perf1.jpg 11+ Years Maintaining, Modifying and Educating TriState Subaru Enthusiasts. Max Capacity
Rt84 is a highway, I'm driving, he's sitting there with his head in the lap top. If' its not safe, we don't do a 3rd or 4th gear pull from 2500 to 5000 rpm. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). SpecBFan
How much does that run you for a street tune? I am about 1.5 hours from Brentuning.

SpecBFan
Quick question for you.Do the AVO caster adjusting bushings for the LCA with a .5 adjustment cause tire wear or is this an improvement over stock bushings? Basically I am looking to get new LCA bushings and im not sure which ones to get. By the way thank you for the help so far.
Nrw
Only affects tire wear if you don't align it properly after. You may drive it harder decreasing tire life but that's a different story
