Transmission oil Question

Recommended Posts

Hi I know this might be a stupid question but I have looked everywhere but here for the answer. I have a 1993 Subaru Legacy L 2.2 L automatic transmission non turbo. The car was given to me about 8 years ago with no manuals, and to be honest besides oil changes, ties and one trans-axle I have done nothing else to it and it has had absolutely no problems at all. I decided yesterday to do a transmission filter, gasket, and fluid change. I did not flush the system simply drained, changed filter, put the pan gasket and pan back on. Here is my question I refilled the trans with around 9 quarts is this to much I am having trouble reading the dipstick accurately. Does anyone know about how much i was supposed to have put back in,and do I need drain some out? Thanks in advance

lets start with are you reading the correct dipstick? The diff oil dipstick is on the right side of the trans, the trans oil is on the left, sorta hidden under the heater core hoses.

but ya, 9 quarts is way too much. You do know you check the trans fluid while the vehicle is running....... i don't remember exactly how much, but mine took about 4 quarts or so dropping the pan.....

Yeah I know which one is the transmission dipstick. On this particular model you do not have to have the vehicle running that why on one side of the stick it has cold and the other it has hot you can check it either way. The reason I am have trouble reading it is because the way the stick goes down the tube and scraps the side causing the fluid to smear up the stick. I thought 9 quarts seemed excessive I just read somewhere that how much it took, and not having ever really working on anything but chevy and ford I thought maybe they were right. I thank you for the quick answer and will be draining about 4 and a half quarts in the morning.

Total fluid capacity is 8.3 US quarts according to my owner's manual.

It states:

1. Drive the vehicle several miles o raise the temp of the transmission fluid to normal operating temperature, `140-176 F.

2. Park vehicle on a level surface and set parking brake.

3. First shift the selector lever in each position. Then shift it in the P position and run the engine at idling speed.

4. Pull out the dipstick and check the fluid level on the gauge. If it is below the lower level on the "HOT" side add the recommended automatic transmission fluid up to the upper level.

"When the fluid level has to be checked without time to warm up the automatic transmission check to see that the fluid level is between the lower level and upper level on the "COLD" side. If it is below that range add fluid up to the upper level. Be careful no to overfill."

The manual also states that when replacing the automatic fluid doing just a drain and fill that usually from 2.6-3.2 US quarts are required. First add slightly over 2.0 US quarts, check the level and then add enough to completely fill the transmission.

NO issues at all with the transmission. It never has any issues to begin with this was just a maintenance filter and fluid change. I did however have the pan off for a long period of time and noticed that the fluid just kept coming out and out and out. But I can tell you the owners manual hit it right on the head. I added 2 quarts just to start seeing it on the stick, and filled a little at a time until it was on the full mark. The car was up to temp and had run it through all the gears. I do not know if it makes a difference but this is a front wheel drive only (two trans axles). Anyways after it read full I drove the car for about three hours paying bills, and it had no issues, no slips,no late catches nothing. I even dogged it out for awhile and for a 4 cyl I was kinda surprised how long it could bark the tires for.

I'm not quite sure what you are saying mnstrmech. Do you think the owner's manual is wrong about the fluid capacity?

just the opposite, the manual is right, that scottt used too much, but im not worried, im not there to see it. If his dipstick reads right, then sweet.

In another note, scottt, had i known you were doing trans work, i ALWAYS push the Valvoline Max-life trans fluid, its great fluid. Synthetic fluid, shift modifiers for smooth shifting.... every trans i put that in makes a big difference.. thats my .02
