lperrier
I'm on my 3rd subaru, Outback, to legacy, then finally last fall finally got an 05 Legacy GT which I had been saving for a long time. After having to deal with the common misfire problem it's been running great. So far I've gotten just intake, downpipe and exhaust done. I'm going to get new mufflers which is one question, currently I have just some cheap ones that my buddy had laying around and they howl not growl. So does anyone have suggestions for mufflers. After I fix that I'm wondering about up pipe? Is it worth it, I've read all kinds of reviews but still not sure which one. Also what other additions can I make to get a little more performance. Thanks
Nrw
You're tuned for the intake and downpipe right? Just checking. Since you have an 2005 get a catless uppipe in there. The factory catted one can clog reducing performance, and eventually fall apart and take out your turbo.
MrTris
@Nrw, he didn't mention an AP, or other tuning. My guess is that he's not tuned for the mods he has. I don't have links to why that's bad, but, if one of you does, could you paste it in here and tell him why his mods are bad?
Max Capacity
Is your car tuned for the mod's you have ? Check the exhaust forum for muffler ideas. Some exhaust shops have a Magna flow knock off they can install. Just have to find time to have mine done. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. lperrier
should i be stage 1 or 2 with exhaust and intake? Like I said i don't have much knowledge about this. Basically I think i should have started with the tuner first before I did this is what I'm getting, probably should have researched more first. So what mods i've done are basically not helping without the tune?
Nrw
Stage 2 is a downpipe and tune. I would link threads as to why you should tune, but I'm not going to spoon feed everyone.

Max Capacity
Keep the stock intake, it's hard to beat. It's good for high 300whp, like more towards 400whp. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. Nrw
Yea I've seen 400awhp made on a stock intake. Was maxed out though. That being said I do have a intake and I am tuned for it.
MrTris
@OP, basically, you're not doing your engine any favors by modding without tuning. These newer cars don't react the same way to the standard bolt-on mods we're used to doing on Hondas or OBD-1 vehicles. I suggest the Cobb AP. That being said, retail on one of those badboys is $595 -- Cobb doesn't allow anyone to let em go for less, but you can find one used for less from someone who has decided on a different tuning path. If you haven't yet, read up on them to find out what you need to know.

Stage 2 is really where it's at, which is downpipe, exh, and tune. I'm personally shooting for stage two and then slowly piecing together all the suspension bits I can dream up and/or think I need... Unless you're trying for some ridiculous hp goal, this is where most of the crowd settles.
lperrier
yeah I'm not going for anything crazy just trying to make my car a little more fun to drive. Luckily I should have an ap in my hands soon. thanks for the help.

lee07
Ditch the AP as well, unless you got a deal on it and get a protune for the same price of an AP, maybe even less. I had a AP for just 1 month Get rid of the "intake" and put the original back on. Do you have a Up as well? Just go get a protune at a local tuning shop and sell the AP
Nrw
No need to ditch it. Has some nice features.
lperrier
yeah sadly no shops nearby that I could find, and for the price didn't seem worth driving all the way to washington or oregon . So this best bet for now. Pretty stoked to see the difference.
Nrw
If you get bored with the OTS map, or want more out of it. Hit up BrenTuning on here. They can get a great tune on there for a low cost and fast turn around time.

Thanks I'm new to this forum and to the 4th Gen LGT, but this shouldnt suggest that i havent learned a few things yet. You should definately leave your intake stock until youre running a much larger turbo. The stock intake, ive read, is good to at least 375whp. I made the same mistake and ended up wasting money on a K&N instead of something more useful like the catless Up pipe and Cross pipe. The intake makes your car run lean. Adding a DP will also hurt the car if you dont get urself a proper tune. I went the Cobb AP route, when in fact i should have visited BrenTuning for a real tune. I chose GrimmSpeed for the Up Pipe, they seem to have a good rep. Hope this helps.
