a93x
Get a castless downpipe. It's the most restrictive part in the exhaust and putting in catless/catted aftermarket piece will allow you to hear the free flowing gases and your turbo spool torque impresses girrls, hp impresses flat-bills
Chris GTO TT
The turbo should not make a lot of noise if the only mod you have is the catless up pipe. the turbo whistle is mostly a function of two things the amount of sound deadening the intake tract has and the amount of air you are moving. Stock intake it's really quiet and stock tune doesn't move that much air, so it isn't surprising you don't really heat the turbo. 2003 Baja 5MT 2016 Outback 2.5i Premium w/Eyesight

Max Capacity
What do you have for a exhaust after the DP ? My wagon has the same DP with a stock exhaust with one thick washer between the Y pipe flange and the mufflers. All I hear is the whoosh of the turbo. When I tryed 4 washers between the flanges this past fall, the turbo began to whine or whistle pretty loud. I removed three of the washers. Now when the turbo began to go, at 142,000 miles and I had the P0011 and P0021 CEL it began to whine, I drove it for about a 1000 miles before the whine chnaged to a whistle, the day it whistled, I stopped driving it and replaced it. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. Nrw
Uppipe only? Probably won't notice it. With a downpipe you'll hear the turbo more.

Risen Saint
Just installed my grimmspeed up pipe over the weekend And after a (close-to) WOT towards the top end the note of the exhaust sounds a bit more aggressive.. unless i screwed up putting exhaust gaskets on again and some of the gasses are making an audible noise near/around the up pipe Other mods are APv3 Invidia catted dp, invidia q300 catback, grimmspeed intake, mishimoto inlet tube, and the 3 port cobb ebcs.... Apparently my tuner is close to shit so im risking a lot atm but HOPEFULLY this next week ill be able to get an etune from someone much more reputable and reliable * But as far as noise... i wanna say theres a small difference at the top end
KartRacerBoy
Drive with you windows open. I had a catless UP and high flow cat downpipe by Cobb. Stage 2. Plenty of turbo chirp with the window down. Catless downpipe? Only if you're not in a state that tests emissions and you love the smell of unburned gasoline at startup. Yuch. I wouldn't recommend going to an aftermarket high flow intake system unless you like the constant sound of wind. It's not at all enticing to my ears. Just annoyingly loud. Somewhere in the archives there are threads about removing the silencer in the airbox to get more intake sound. I tried that for a day and quickly put the silencer back in. My friend's car with a high flow intake was worse than not having a silencer. Didn't sound racecar at all. More like driving with windows open at 80 mph. KartRacerBoy
Oh, if you really want to hear boost pop from the turbo, get a ricey blow off valve.
1-3-2-4
Oh, if you really want to hear boost pop from the turbo, get a ricey blow off valve. I have a kompackt recirc BPV and to me it's just as loud as a BOV when it vents back into the intake.. If I'm at low throttle it wont fully open but I hear the compressor flutter.. After 5 PSI it's sure enough to fully open.
