Volume up = Alarm going off ?!?!

Recommended Posts

So I have had my LGT for a little over a month now and have had a few problems with the alarm. My first instance was driving around town and I turned the volume up from my steering wheel control and the alarm started going off while I’m driving. The horn just stayed on like someone just holding it down and all my doors locked with the security light blinking. I took out the keys and tried to unlock it but the horn would not stop going. I eventually pushed the "panic" button with my keys out of the ignition and the horn went from one long beep to intermittent beeps. I pushed panic again and it turned off. I did some research but could not find anything similar to this. I started using the volume controls again without any problem so I figured it could have just been a fluke. About two weeks later I parked my car and hit the lock button about 10 feet away from the car when all of a sudden the alarm started going off again. I tried to turn it off with the panic button again but this time it was not working. I ended up having to disconnect my battery for the night because we were at a casino/hotel parking lot when this happened. The next morning I connected my battery and tried to start my car. It did start but had to crank it a few times. Then on our way home from the casino when I pushed the volume up button on my steering wheel and the alarm started doing it again on the highway. I had used my steering wheel volume buttons every day before this past Monday 2/4 without any incident. I am going to start by disabling the horn and trying to trigger the alarm going off to see if I can pinpoint the cause. I have a feeling it is in the steering wheel since it is a intermittent problem, my guess is maybe some wires are loose. Has anyone ever heard of something like this?:spin:

Update: Reset ECU and quite using the volume up button. Haven't had another issue yet but this is mostly irrelevant since the culprit is the volume button.

Have you cleaned the battery terminals ?

How old is the battery ?

When you pull the battery cable for a while it will reset the ECU, the car will crank for a bit before it fires. That's normal.

Battery terminals are clean. When I bought the car I noticed it had a newer looking interstate battery in it but have not checked date yet. The car started up perfectly when I reset the ecu by disconnecting the battery and pushing the brakes. It has only had a hard start when the battery was disconnected after the alarm was going off.

I'm stumped, never heard of this before.

Try to PM BAC5.2, GTTuner, or Frank_ster they may have some ideas.

Me too. I am going to take out the horn fuse and take apart the steering wheel in the summer. My hunch is that a wire is loose in the steering wheel and is getting moved when the volume button is pressed. Intermittent electrical problems are my least favorite to diagnose.
