Stang70Fastback
So, I'm planning on packing a whole bunch of emergency supplies and equipment into my car as a sort of "bug-out bag" and I had considered using the spare tire well under the rear carpet for that purpose. Unfortunately, some jerk at Subaru decided to put a spare tire in there instead. I don't want to remove that, as having an "apocalypse escape vehicle" without a spare tire would be rather silly, but I have come up with a possible alternative. Many luxury cars now come with folded spare tires in order to save space, which are really nothing more than the steelie rim, and what looks like a flat ring of rubber around it. When you inflate the tire, it unfolds and expands into a spare donut. If I could replace the stock spare tire with one of these, I could fill all that extra space around the tire with STUFF! Does anyone happen to know offhand where one might purchase one of these things? Alternatively, does anyone know of any cars that come with these from the factory, and that happen to have the same 5x100 bolt pattern so that I might be able to go to a junkyard and check if any still have them in the trunk? TireRack doesn't seem to sell them, so I wonder if they aren't offered for sale other than straight to manufacturers. Does anyone have any insight on these things? SurlyOldManMN
So ummm... Where does the air compressor go?
Stang70Fastback
In cars that come equipped with these tires, they come with a small pump usually packed under the tire to inflate it. Inconvenient at best, though probably not a bad idea since most people usually let their spare tires go flat anyway. In my case, air would come from the 5 gallon tank and compressor I have on-board. Stang70Fastback
Hmm. I suppose I could always try and find a way to mount one of those tires on a steelie with the correct bolt pattern and hope that the spare doesn't inflate to the same size as their stock tire sizes (I doubt it does.) Does anyone know of any vehicles that might have these that have a 5x100 bolt pattern?
