05 Legacy Starting problem

Ok so I have an auto 05 legacy i and recently the car has trouble starting. SOmetimes when I try to start it I hear a ticking/clicking so i stop turning the key and immediately try again with no waiting and it will start. Sometimes it takes 1 try sometimes 2 or 3. Sometimes just starts right up and dont have the problem for a week and then the next week the problem comes back and then goes away. I can always get it eventually to start just by turning key a few times.

Had the battery tested and it checked out good. At one point the car would be dead and the dash and rps would go haywire when trying to start it so I changed and tightened the battery terminal and it hasn't done that since but I still get clicking when trying to start it. This problem doesn't happen all the time. I could try and start it and it will start right up. Other times it takes 1 or 2 tries. Happens in both hot (90+ where I live) and also in the cold (20degrees where i live.) When I turn the key and hear the clicking the radio display tweaks out and looks like a bunchf squARES. I was getting a cam relay p code at one point ovetr the summer but i changed it myself. I have also changed the spark plugs. Any help or advice would be helpful. I know a bunch of people are going to ay starter :p but I don't want to pay for it just to find out that wasn't it. Others I have red had a similar problem and changed the starter just to have the problem keep occuring.

Thanks!

I would clean all the grounds. Start with the battery terminals as you didn't say you cleaned them yet.

How old is the battery ?

They don't last much past 6 years.

Well i cleaned and changed the battery terminals and tightened them. Also had the battery checked and was told it was all good pumping like 12.7v or something like that but yes the battery is a few years old. Will have to check the grounds. Don't know where they are but nothing a little internet searching can't handle. Thanks.

One is under the TMIC going to the bracket on the firewall, the other is on the bottom of the drivers side head going to the frame rail. You'll need to drop the bottom engine cover for that one.

While the TMIC is off, you should clean the connections on the starter and may be pull it and put some grease in the shaft. A lot of these cars have the gear hang up on the shaft and in the FW a second or two after you return the key to run when statring the car when it's cold out.

If you still have the problem after all that, I'd think about replacing the $90.00 battery, before paying a shop to fix it.
