ryo7
I am new to the forum, and own two 96 Legacies. One is a red/gray outback with a 5 speed and the 2.2 litre. The other is a green legacy L with an automatic 2.2. I need the following parts for these cars...as deer are a frequent problem out here. I need the red/gray bumper cover with foglights for the Red one. It will eventually show up in a junk yard I am just without it for now. I need a Drivers side Red/Gray fender for the red outback. Anyone got one? I need a green hood for my Green Legacy. Need a passenger side headlight assembly for green legacy. Also, if anyone has some input on this problem I am having. My mechanic is quite skilled and knows subarus pretty well. I was having an overheating issue and my heat disappeared. We have confirmed my heater core is not leaking and not clogged. I have replaced the thermostat, radiator, and water pump all together with brand new parts...and only once it's been running for a while will the temperature rise...my mechanic thinks its the heads...I want to know if this seems like a head problem before moving forward. My oil and coolant do not mix, and I do drop oil from the...intake manifold gaskets? Slightly so...but I do not lose coolant. That is the best way I can describe it. I welcome anyone who has some input on this problem to email me directly at ryo7@rocketmail.com Also anyone with any of the parts mentioned above {and this list will grow as deer season continues } can email me also ryo7@rocketmail.com. Pictures would Help. I live in Western Pennsylvania just north of Pittsburgh and am willing to drive for bigger stuff. Thanks folks...awesome forums you got here. Looking forward to collaborating with some of you. Ryo
johnegg
welcome. was it over heating before the new t-stat? did you use a subaru t-stat? these cars do not like cheap after market t-stats. another cause may be air trapped in the cooling system after a refill. burping will help if this is the cause. search ''how to fill and burp your cooling system''. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/fill-and-burp-your-cooling-system-burpcoolingsystem-198487.html?t=198487&highlight=fill+burp+cooling+system
ryo7
We did a new subaru therm bought at a dealer. We also have flushed and refilled the coolant system 3 times...I doubt it would have done all this each time if it were not related to another issue. Stasis
If you weren't doing it the way described in johneggs guide then you could have air in the system still even if you did it your way 50 times
ryo7
I know he removed the cap, pulled out the vent plug and did the top off at least two of the times as described in the beginning. I'll send this instructional over to him. My guy's pretty good. A redneck that hangs in his own garage has a lift and giant welder. His work's always held up for me. This is the first time we've had to chase something in over 5 years I've been going to this guy. In case this method doesn't change anything...what would be the next thing to check? monkeyposeur
Headgaskets. I wouldn't rule out air in the system.
ryo7
Right, I'm not. I am just wondering what the next step would be. I should hear from my mechanic brian today if he did the bleeding as specified in that instructional. It's been emailed to him too.
ryo7
Mid 90's legacies seemed notorious for headgaskets around 150-300k...Would you all say the 2.2 or the 2.5 needs them more often than not? Either way, 150k is an amazing amount of mileage to get out of a car before needing it so even at worse they are still stellar performance vehicles. monkeyposeur
I would say almost all of the 2.5s need them at some point. The non-interference 2.2s (EJ22E) very rarely need them replaced. The exception to the 2.2s are the 22Ts that are in the first gen turbo legacies (90-94). They can go bad as well. At least mine did, lol. As far as the parts you need, those are very large items! I could find probably some of them but I am not interested in shipping them. We have a lot of junkyards out here so I'm lucky in that respect. The headlight is a possibility. Sometimes I find decent ones. They are about $30 at the yards here. I'd have to charge you for shipping of course.
ryo7
Yeah I was only mainly referring to if anyone was parting out a legacy near the western PA area. I must say I have two 96s each with a 2.2 as described above. The one potentially needing the headgasket has 260k on it and already had a tranny replaced. I've seen the 5 speed 2.2 outbacks of that gen go 500k without more than a clutch...and I am convinced if someone hadn't hammered this car before I got it, that it would have as well. ryo7
Around my area, rednecks that hang in their garage are better than professional mechanics...Unless this is what you're implying. I've gone to this guy for 5 years. He has a full time daylight mechanic job for one of the best shops in the area too. His work has never done me wrong, always held up, he charges fair prices for everything {fair to me anyway}, and always does his best to get my stuff done promptly.
