A Neon guy's Outback

Danteneon

That is true. Seems like every time I get time to take pictures, I'm at home and the sun is going down behind my car  Let me see what I can do this weekend.

I need to get some night shots of the HIDs and LEDs I installed that I forgot to mention. And my STI pedals. And my SPT battery hold down. And my STI rad cap. And my Cobb AP cord routing.

I'm such a slacker.

Thanks guys  I still need to get more pictures of the Outback taken, but as requested, here are some from my Neon...

A lot of work has gone into that car, but those show some of the highlights. I have plenty more pics of that car, so if you are interested in something specific, just let me know. I have since sold her to a friend of mine who will actually drive her

What HID's did you install? And do you like them?

I installed the kit Diode Dynamics sells in both the headlamp and fog lamps. I love them  I am a firm believer in doing retrofits, but honestly, the output and cutoff using the stock projectors is quite good. I really need to make some time to get good pictures of them.

My Outback is a flamethrower!

Seems as though the bumper only lightly melts on my >2mile commute. Going to Pittsburgh at a healthy rate of speed is a whole different ballgame. Now I have some pretty expansive exhaust cut-outs. Time to get the JDM bumper methinks

I also broke down and replaced my tires. I had chunked up the drivers front pretty bad because I didn't roll the fenders like I should have. Then I picked up a nail and drove on it for just under a mile...just long enough to compromise the sidewall. Here are the new meats...

Even stickier than the Kumhos I was running. The drive to PA up the turnpike was a absolute blast! It was the first time I got to really drive it since I installed the 93 tune and cat-back. Power with ease and so smooth and quiet (minus the beautiful exhaust note of course).

Now I need to get off my butt and finish the grille!

No fitment issues with 245s on the Legacy GT struts?

You should take a video of the exhaust sound :)

I am using SpecB struts which have a slightly higher perch than the LGT units. I have some pics on page 2 that show how close they are, but no rubbing there.

That's funny as I run 245/45/18XL tires on my LGT and I love how it fills the wheel wells. :)

Yep! I really wanted to keep the stock tire diameter and this size is it. The 40 series would have been too low for the stock SpecB springs IMO

I don't know why there are purple splotches in the pictures.

The grille surrounds are the factory chrome pieces painted OBP. I cut the grille insert, sanded it, and sprayed it with black Plastidip. I also painted the condenser, bumper reinforcement, and other bits behind the grille flat black so they don't stand out. The next step is to make an extension for the upper grille frame to push the upper center portion of the grille out so it isn't quite so overshadowed by the hood trim. I'm also thinking about adding a small SpecB emblem to the lower right corner.

Funny you should say that. I was talking to my counter guy about painting my headlamps  The more I black out on the front of my car, the more all that chrome in my headlamps stands out. So I need to open them up and paint them.

After that, I will order the JDM rear bumper.

Danteneon, thanks for tackling the grill project. I've been curious what it would look like modified. I think it's coming along really nice! I might have to look for a spare grill to go this route as well. I agree with the blacking out headlights, it'll really tie everything together.

Keep up the great work!

Any updates to your grill? Curious what it looks like if you have made the changes.

It's been a while since I've been on. I haven't done any mods to the grille yet, but I have an idea once I find the time/materials to try it out. I need to get some pictures up of the lighting upgrades and such.

Wow, been a while! Work has been a lot busier, so I don't have nearly as much free time as I once did. The grille is still just like it was, but that isn't a horrible thing since it is holding up great!

That said, I don't think I will have the closure panel made up because I am embarking on a new project. Installing a Legacy hood!

For those that may not know, when the Outback was re-designed for 2008, Subaru decided to make a unique hood not found on any other model or country for that matter. That would be fine, except the 2008-2009 Outback hood is made out of steel. The Legacy was still made out of aluminum. I want a lighter hood

Preliminary measurements show it should be an easy (hah) matter of using a Legacy hood and grille, and then modify the bumper cover next to the headlamps to match the new hood. Cake! And yes, I will be modifying the Legacy grille as well, but should be even easier because I don't have to worry about the lack of a top frame.

Stay tuned!

blacked out headlights would look good with this setup for sure. Mine are blacked out. Not sure why suby went with the chrome route after coming out of the black 05-06s. Dont they usually try to make cars meaner looking instead of flabby?
