Can anyone identify this (broken) part?

Recommended Posts

So I still have the P0852 code, Neutral Switch Input Circuit High, and was poking around in my shifting area to see what I could find. I know that I could just disable it..but I haven't got around to messing with RomRaider and all that. So I just opened up the shifter and started looking around and found this part:

If you can't tell, it goes into the driver's hand side of the shifting mechanism.

Next, I took a mirror and attempted to look through the crack in there and found this little arm that appears to be broken.

If you look across the top of the pic you can see the fake wood trim that might give you some frame of reference.

So anyone know what this might be? Also, where is this "inhibitor switch" that might be causing my code? I noticed that my car came out of park without the key in the ignition, is this normal for these cars? If so that would be the first time I've seen that in a car. I'm afraid I might have just found another problem instead of the original one.

Thanks for looking!

UPDATE: okay thinking about it...it's obvious that it is the shift lock mechanism. I put the car in "ON" and pressed the brake and the little guy moves. So I guess it's just another problem. I think I'll ignore it tho..doesn't seem to affect anything and it's 50 bucks. And it's kind of nice when you need to get your car into neutral but left the keys in the house..saves 20 seconds ;-). Still chasing that p0852 code tho. Today I pulled the ECU and cleaned the connectors. Doubt that's it, but I'll have to drive for a bit to find out. Found something else out today, too. When pulling the ECU, I noticed on the back of it was tape on which was written "Subaru Parts Car". So, I guess that it's not the original equipment. Used cars can be a great value, but I sure hate the unknowns.

Yea. I've been doing some research and came up with the terrible conclusion that the 5eat Inhibitor switch is not replaceable. I just PM'd him to see if he could offer some assistance. It seems it is located inside the VB and as far as I can tell, unobtainable separately. I discovered, too that my car will start in any gear...grrrr.. So I'm guessing that switch/sensor is completely shot.
