AT to MT conversion

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a 92 Legacy L for free. It needs some body work but for the most part it is in good running condition. I was playing around with the idea of swapping it to a MT. Has any one tackled this or know what I'm getting into?

It's been done. If you are mechanically inclined its not impossible. You need to find a 5MT with matching rear diff, swap it, and then ground one of the ecu pins so it knows its a manual. You might also want to swap in a dash assembly from a 5MT as well.

legacy777 from bbscentral posted up this great thread on how to swap a transmission into a first gen legacy: http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/swap/swap.html

He went all out. It's a great resource.

I am a mechanic and I've done replacements but never a conversion. That is an excellent write up. I think I'll start gathering parts. Hopefully mine will be a little simpler because it's already AWD. Thanks for you help

It is very tempting but the main purpose of this car is to drive while i amp up my 4th gen. I probably will end up doing some minor things here and there to it but for the most part will be just alittle beat around car.

I just finished mine a few weeks ago. It was a turbo awd into a NA fwd body. It requires an awd rear crossmember/gas tank also. Took about 3 months for this frame up build. From 1 to 10 on difficulty its an 8. Here's my build thread http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=49620

It runs like a BA now and weighs 3000lbs with full interior. Puts stock STI's to shame. Insurance is cheap as hell also.
