Low Coolant help

Recommended Posts

So maybe I am being paranoid but idk. I have always delt with NA subarus and the HG problem so thats why I am paranoid.

Bought my Leggy GT with 108K on it. 20K on new turbo. Never had to add a drop of coolant to it. Went stage 1 about 5,000 miles ago and everything still was great. I dont abuse the car minus the occasional spirited drive, but recently I could get a wiff of coolant after any drive, but level still was good.

This morning after my hour comute to work I checked the overflow tank and it was at LOW. I had the heater on the whole way. Went out to check the car at break, Overflow tank just a bit above LOW and radiator and turbo coolant tank all full.

I checked the upper and lower coolant hoses and they appear dry. Nothing under the car.

Any ideas of what other hoses to check?

  • I Donated

Heater core lines, coolant cross over pipe, thermostat housing, radiator, etc....just take a general look around.

Its 730am and almost 100 degrees outside where I'm at. What on earth do you need your heater for this time of year!!>!!!>!>>>>

I saw some threads about the "t" line under the IC??

That T is normally talked about for the vaccum lines.

A 2008 should not be leaking coolant. You may want to get a flash light, get under the car and look up under the bottom engine cover.

I must of had you mixed up with another thread.

These cars don't noramlly have HG issues. They fixed that.

05 could have the crossover tube rusting. I replaced mine when I did the short block. It was pretty rusty.

No crossover tube is below the timing cover up front. There are a few hoses and the big aluminum tube on top of the short block, but that has o-rings and should never leak.

Trying to remember what it looks like, I think all of the hoses are on the drivers side top/back by the brake booster.

The rest of the hoses are up front down below the timing belt cover.

My thread, "got some new stuff for eng R&R" might have pictures. I have more then that at home if you need.

Hey Max, I think I'm having the same problem. Can't locate a leak. I've changed both radiator caps, top hose, hose to turbo reservoir, but not seeing any around the bottom hose. Get a faint smell at times, but more so the swishing of coolant in the heater core. I try top it up (Run engine with heat on while topping up turbo reservoir). Stumped :/

Guess I spoke too soon. I'm sorry to beat a dead horse. I noticed that I still get a faint burning smell. When replacing bottom hose I drained coolant, and also, in cleaning what I thought was just an old dirty reservoir, turned out to be a reservoir that had significant oil deposits in it. I don't know if this was from precious owner, but there was a lot of goop and black residue in front reservoir. Cleaned it thoroughly, and have been observing for a week now; no oil residue. I still hear coolant swishing in heater core though, especially if I rev while idle. Flow wil correspond with revving. WHat gives..is there a possible head gasket issue? Coolant levels seem to be remaining the same. Apologies for long 'windedness'.
