davesbx
I have a 08' LGT with a manual transmission. I am also looking about moving to the other coast next summer, from new england to LA. While I do the move I will probably tow a small trailer. I have been thinking about having a turbo upgrade to an TDO5 18 g for a little while. I know that a larger turbo will have more lag on a Dyno but on the high way while cruising will the larger turbo put more stress on the engine or less stress on the engine. With the stock turbo and suspension how much tongue weight can have and tow. Would a 6 Pot break up grade for the front wheels help or would the breaks be too strong in the front? Thank you in advance, Davesbx
Mega Users paintpollz Posted August 10, 2012 Mega Users Share Posted August 10, 2012 dafuq. what color your lgt. i bet ive seen u around i tow a a lot. stock brakes and stock turbo and they are fine. always put the majority of the weight over the axles. you should not have a lot of tongue weight, we are driving small sedans that aren't meant to be used for towing, although many on here have proved that they can do quite well with a few thousand pounds on the back. If the car is drastically sagging, too much tongue weight. ive towed a couple thousand pounds with minimal sag, its all how you distribute weight on the trailer. i have a 4x8 utility. 84k with stock clutch as well, no slippage. AND I'm stage 2 powa. why would you upgrade to an 18g for a little while? that my local friend, doesn't make cents. youre going to need a clutch, fuel mods, new intercooler, the list goes on. davesbx
I live in central CT. I don't tow right now, just thinking about a future move across country to LA and was thinking about doing the 18g prior to moving and if it would make a big difference. My car was tuned by EFI and I have 250 hp and 311 torque.
frank_ster
legally ou can tow the same wih a 2.5i as you can with a gt. bigger turbo could help with fuel economy on flat ground but then be worse in the hills because you may need to gear down. Now that's thinking out of the boxer! fyi all 05 + legacy's have built in code reader

CapnJack
Limit yourself to no more than 200lbs of tongue weight. How much will you be hauling in the back of your car? The more weight you put in your car (trunk, back-seat, etc) the less you should put on the hitch. Try to keep the trailer balanced as much as you can with some tongue weight or else the trailer will sway. The brakes on the Legacy are large enough to handle the extra weight. The brakes on the LGT are bigger than most 1/2 ton truck brakes. Before you consider a larger turbo, you should consider a new clutch. Pulling that much weight across the country will put a huge strain on your clutch at those power levels. All in all, the Legacy is not made to tow a trailer cross-country. Yes, you can put a hitch on it and tow a trailer, but in the end, it is not made to do it all day. You will probably be fine doing it, but if you are looking at upgrading the turbo and brakes just for this trip, you would be better off(and cheaper) renting a truck and trailer and towing it IMHO. planelazy
Towing capacity is 2700 lbs. I wouldn't tow another car unless you use a dolly, that way you keep the tongue weight down, unless you're towing another Subaru, then you have to use a full car trailer. Since you're going cross country, I wouldn't do it. Rent a Uhaul and a trailer and tow your car... or rent a truck.
ShrinerMonkey
I would avoid the Uhaul trailers unless you are only planning on getting the smallest one and keeping the weight very low. None of their trailers have brakes and are usually in pretty terrible condition. I would avoid Uhaul altogether and rent a truck from Penske, Budget, or Ryder and tow your car with a trailer.
