mathewsdevil
So the 2.5L engine in my 1997 Legacy Outback has kicked the bucket all due to overheating. I know the EJ25s from '96-'99 are notorious for this and was wondering - is it possible to put a 2000/2001/2002 2.5L engine in my '97? If so, what would it entail? I'd like to replace the engine and know that the issues were fixed in the newer years plus these year engines aren't as expensive. All help is appreciated! taylormac1993
Just rebuild an EJ25D from a junkyard. If you replace the gaskets and make sure all of the mating surfaces are flush, it should carry you another 100k miles (assuming your mechanics are all good). If I'm not mistaken, the newer 2.5s are SOHC, so it seems like it should just drop in place of your DOHC with a little fab work. I don't know about anything but the EJ25Ds though so don't listen to me. lol
taylormac1993
Found some info on Wikipedia. Apparently the EJ251 has the same HG leak issue. The EJ251 was used in Imprezas, Outbacks, Legacys, and Foresters from 00-04. Also, it is SOHC.
johnegg
is it possible to put a 2000/2001/2002 2.5L engine in my '97? not easily. with enough time and money you can do anything, even put a small V-8 on a motorcycle. but there are easier swaps for the 97 subaru. DOHCEJ22E1
You can use later year EJ251/3s but you need to remove the crank gear, crank sensor, cam sensor, intake w/it's wiring harness, knock sensor, & the cylinder heads from the 251/3 & replace them with those from your 25D. The 25D heads will bolt right on & that combo should create a higher compression engine. Just assemble it with new seals/MLS head gaskets as you would a 25D & you should be good. Which ECU should he use?

johnegg
the one that came with the car. the ecu has to match the harness. when they move pins on the ecu, the change the harness to match.

mathewsdevil
I appreciate all of the responses but I have found a wonderful deal on a 2.5L out of a '96. It's in great shape and the price was right. Again, thanks for all of the advice (or lack there of).
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted August 20, 2012 I Donated Share Posted August 20, 2012 Found some info on Wikipedia. Apparently the EJ251 has the same HG leak issue. The EJ251 was used in Imprezas, Outbacks, Legacys, and Foresters from 00-04. Also, it is SOHC. They do have a head gasket issue, but its no where near as serious as the EJ25D. The EJ251 leaks coolant EXTERNALLY (While the 25D is internal). You can pick up a coolant additive from the Subaru dealer that fixes the problem for you. -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
