Cam seal leak after Hg's

Recommended Posts

Allright, so 2.5l, 98 outback

when putting the lower cam back on with my inch/lbs torque wrench, it didn't click and the bolt broke sheared right off, it was the lower seal by the cam pulley that seamed to be leaking, i was able to use an easy out and then proceeded to slap a 1/4'' bolt and snugged it up. I put the car back together and fired it up, then it started leaking oil from what it seamed to be where i had replaced that bolt, so i tried to tighten it and of course it stripped, so after trying to put a larger bolt without taping it, no luck

so I pulled the motor, pulled the valve cover off, and put a 5/16 stud, and then used a nut to pull the outer journal in,

i put the car back together and its still leaking ! im fed up with pulling this motor,

im assuming it might be leaking from the upper seal maybe ? i checked to make sure they were tight, now could it be because it did it by hand and their to tight ? originally i did it to the book value, which was much lower than the other journals.

any ideas ? it looked like they were new seals, they never leaked, and the Hg's have been already done, so i put them back, maybe the seal is crooked on the top ? it is possible to get to with the motor in ? the cover is also bolted to the head behind the cam pulley, so i think this is a huge headache

thanks

I have a leak from my lower passenger side seal since I did my headgasket too. Did you put sealant on the cap before bolting it down? I torqued mine per that Haynes manual, and was getting real frustrated because it was too tight, just on each exhaust cam. Did some searching to find out that the front cap was like half the torque of the others. Now the one leaks and I wonder if its the cap or the seal. I'll find out soon as I'm tired of driving around with an oil leak.

Good luck to you, I know the anger you feel about this. I took a lot of extra time to clean my nasty greasy engine and cross member and extra time making sure everything looked great and ready to drop it back in, just to fire it up and find a leak.

yea that bites ! i know how it feels

Well with a mirror and from underneath I was able to see that it was coming out the front seal on the intake side,

so now to pull out the rad, and belts, crank pulley and timing belt to get the the seal, not sure if its not sitting right or damaged, but we will find out, when i replaced the exhaust side and added a stud, i cleaned it up and added some Rtv

good luck to you too,

two very good points, pulled it apart and the seal wasnt quite seated correctly, so i tapped her in a bit and were golden, now im not getting a signal for my temp gauge and thermostate isnt opening, rad hose was real hot and lots of hot air, so im thinking it should of open, and theres an air lock

thanks
