New owner of 2005 Outback 2.5 XT limited and got some questions...

Hi all. I posted this at the subaruoutback forums but was referred here as I believe the Legacy GT shares the same engine as the 2.5XT.

 

Anyway, I just bought this car and have some questions to get things going right to start and prevent any issues before they happen. As well as to see what I got myself into.

 

So the car is as follows:

 

145500 miles.

Replaced timing belt and water pump at 119k. Regularly changed synthetic every 5k. Also transmission fluid replaced every 30k, and filter at 60k (and not sure if replaced at 120k as well).

 

The car ran beautifully. I used to drive 2005 SRT4 and brother has WRX so familiar driving turbos. It drove great. Had it idling while I checked it inside and out and heard no issues. Engine looked fine also. Although subie cover was unbolted. Interior and exterior was **** clean for a car with 150k.

 

Issues found:

 

The sunroof had some plastic pin that was bent and didn't lock right. So one side didn't stay up. Owner and I got it back in right and it works but definitely need to replace the pin. Has anyone heard of this happening? No visible leak signs so don't think it had leaking issues.

 

The front tow thing was missing. Not sure how much they cost but I'm not gonna be towing with this so dunno if worth replacing.

 

I picked it up for 7k. It was black and tan interior. It is also AUTOMATIC (just got sick of the stick on my SRT4 when I had that... and any future cars I buy will be be DSG to be honest, I'm done with manual... it can be fun but not worth the hassle to me). I honestly loved it and other than mileage... I couldn't ask for more. Think fair price. Now I'm hoping for no issues and want to get the run down on what to check for or tell a subie dealer or specialist to check for to prevent issues.

 

So if you guys could help me out with things to be looking out for. That'd be great. Any other parts I should be replacing? What type of oil do you suggest (obviously synthetic by any brand?)? What parts should I expect to replace soon? Will turbo last? Any upgrades that could in be reliability?

 

Any and all help greatly appreciated. What do you guys think of purchase? I never bought car with high mileage like this but I'm hopeful.

Welcome and congrats on the OBXT! As long as you loved your purchase,that is all that matters in the whole wide world.It is well maintained by your description.I won't worry about anything at the moment.Enjoy and take her for a long drive so you'll get to know her...Ride Sally ride!

oils, rotella t6 5w-40 is good, Castrol synthec is another good choice, stay away from mobil1 5w-30 as it thins out quickly, there 10w-30 is abetter oil.

 

both my cars are on Amsoil European 5w-40 and their filters.

 

Learn how to check the oil and top it off as needed, NEVER let it get low on oil.

 

 

Axle bearings/hubs will be the next thing to look out for. Lots of post about them lately. I have replaced 3 out 4 on my 05. I have the 4th in the shed when it comes time.

 

From your back ground, you may want to remove the catted up pipe, they have been known to come lose and take out the turbo in GT's. But most GT's are driven different the XT's.

305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).  CHECK your oil, these cars use it.
