OutbackXT05
Well i just got my vf43 today with 67k miles on it claimed zero shaft play perfect condition. An the first thing i check was the shaft play. Front to back there was none. Side to side there was very little but enough to hit the compressor housing. The fins were all good but it looked like there were some very light scratches on the housing. I know theres supposed to be play for oil clearances but im assuming since it was touching the housing that isnt good. When i spin it it only sometimes touches the housing. So now im just really pissed that i bought a turbo that hits the housing. So what can i do now? I know there are rebuild kits on ebay for about 55 bucks. And i can buy a new wheel for 50 bucks. I dont even know if its worth fixing or not. I just spent 425 bucks on it and the more i spend i should have just got a bnr turbo.
I Donated broknindarkagain Posted July 28, 2012 I Donated Share Posted July 28, 2012 Did you pay for it via pay pal. You can dispute the pay pal transaction for it not being as described. PayPal sides with the buyer 99% of the time. Just piece together the turbo as good as you can so you can send it back to the seller and get your money back. -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." fahr_side
Quit now. VF-43 is a POS anyway. Obligatory 'build thread' Increased capacity to 2.7 liters, still turbo, but no longer need spark plugs. ehsnils
It's probably only good as a rebuild core at a professional shop.

They are, and I note you've moved on to bigger and better things. Just hate the way all of these turbos fall flat on their face at shockingly low rpm... LosAngelesLGT
Well yes, but for me a vf39, or 16g sized turbo for that matter, are way, way too small on pump gas. The 39 was EXTREMELY satisfying on e85 and imho would be plenty for 9 out of 10 forum members and I imagine the 16g would be even better. I got tried to not even being able to be a chase car for my friends and their low low 11 second cars. I have serious concerns that I am not going to he happy with my torque curve for canyon/mountain attacks on pump.
fahr_side
I have serious concerns that I am not going to he happy with my torque curve for canyon/mountain attacks on pump. Simple. Only run on corn. Sorry OP. /threadjack You basically got screwed. If the blades can touch the compressor cover, it's knackered. Stop payment / get money back / go kick seller's ass / whatever. GTTuner
I wouldn't jump off a bridge over some shaft play. My 18g had play when I put it in over 60,000 miles ago. It still spools great and works fine. If there are no witness marks of the blade hitting the housing, make sure it's getting good oil supply and run 5w-40 oil. Max Capacity
It's the number of story's like this that helped me decide to go with a new vf52. I've learned over the years to pay a little more up front to get a good part. I figure if I was going to pay $400 for a used piece, just put that much towards the new part and figure it only cost you the difference from the used piece to the new piece. Good luck with getting your money back. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). CHECK your oil, these cars use it. LosAngelesLGT
^You have read my story about getting the vf39 right? Its on the forum somewhere but suffice to say that I drove 10+ hours (round trip in traffic) to see 5 or 6 different vf39 turbos over 2-3 weeks f/s on NASIOC locally and every single one had issues. I finally bought one for ~$550 from a guy with hundreds of iTraders that had under 10k miles on it and was like new. Basically I paid myself something like $10 + gas and food for a lot of headache. Was a learning lesson, particularly about guys who bought a turbo and never had it installed. Fahr_side I did not know we were threadjacking. I thought the original purpose of the thread was already handled. Turbo is bad. Try to get money back or send out for rebuild.
OutbackXT05
Alright so pretty much my best bet is to try and get my money back because it was touching the housing and there was light score marks on the housing. So the item was not as described by the seller.

Be sure to tell him you're prepared to open a dispute if he doesn't work with you. -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." fahr_side
Glad to hear that got straightened out so easily. Learn your lesson... no used IHI turbos! 20G can be run for quite some time on a stock block if you know what you're doing. If not... hope you have a good connection for parts and labor or are good yourself with rebuilds. Bigger than 20G... good luck. OutbackXT05
I have my old block laying around and still in great shape. The walls were not chewed up by my broken ringlands. Id just rebuild it myself. Im a very conservative driver 95% of the time im not in boost and below 3000 rpm. But that other 5% im going crazy. And im going to be running equal legnth headers for added security for my pistons. My old block #4 had 7 cracks and #2 had a chunk broken. But 1 and 3 were spotless. Gire
I'm glad the seller was a stand up guy and refunded your money.... But honestly, the turbo you bought had 67K miles on it? that thing was long in the tooth anyway to be taking a risk on it. That's practically how many clicks are on my stock V40 and when it gets pulled out and replaced, even if it appears perfect, I'm using it as an anchor for my kids' row boat. OutbackXT05
Ya I just went off his word because he had great itrader and seemed like a great guy which he was. I'll take this as a learning experience and am gonna buy new from now on. So I guess im sticking with my vf40 till around december. Just need to get my headers. Then throw on my GS 3 port ebc and get another tune. And here I was thinking I was finally gonna get all of my stage 3 parts out of my room.
