TrueWhiteBoy
I figured I'd see if you guys had any recommendations on knife sets for under $50. I will need some steak knives as well, but they can be a separate purchase as long as the total of the two purchases comes up to around $50). Ah I wish I had more money

BDII
Spend $50 on a nice set of steak knives that are usually part of a better set. You can slowly build a nice knife set over time. Need forum help? Private Message legGTLT

TrueWhiteBoy
The goal is to have a set and replace it piece by piece with better stuff as time/money allows. Unfortunately I need a somewhat decent set soon as I don't currently have any knives and eating out every day is getting expensive. Also, I have about $800 worth of car work along with a bunch of start up expenses that come with a new apartment (my gas bill was $70 this month. Actual gas used: $3 worth). What this guy said. A good set of knives will last you forever. A shitty set of knives will have to be replaced in a couple of years. For the former, I recommend J. A. Henckels. Good stuff. RuskiTrombone
I pieced together a nice knife set from Henckels and Wusthof knives I purchased over a few months from places like Marshals. I love the knives, however over 90% of the time I use the same $30 bread knife for everything. It is very sharp and does everything I want it to do. I've had the set for over 5 years now. BDII
J. A. Henckels I bought these as my first complete set. They are bottom of the barrel Henckels and the are all serrated. Not high quality but is a complete set for $17 over your budget. You can replace the knives piece by piece. BraddA
I'd echo others who've recommend fewer knives of higher quality. Frankly, one solid chef's knife will do everything just fine. IMO nice steak knives are kind of a gimmick.
BDII
^ good point. If you're cooking steak that needs a sharp knife you need better cuts of meat/better cooking methods not better knives. Need forum help? Private Message legGTLT
Brady
Honestly, I've been very happy with the Hampton Forge set I got from Target. I think it currently runs for $52. Solid steak knives and a good basic set of knives with block. I think this is the current set: http://www.target.com/p/hampton-forge-continental-15-pc-cutlery-set/-/A-10936907
DeltaNu1142
On the other hand, if you're never planning to get a set of really good knives, you probably shouldn't get just one. If you never use a high quality knife, you could be completely happy with a budget set. Tits mcgee
allgrownup
^^This. Get a solid chef's knife (I have Wusthof Classics and love them) check craigslist for used knives. Its metal and can be sharpened (Free sharpening at Sur La Table) (parenthesis king)
WagonMafiaPhunk
My advice...coming from someone that has used terribly shitty knives and nice Japanese knives, don't buy a set of knives unless you know that you NEED every single knife that comes in the set. The exception would be a set of 4 steak knives; that's a good investment because if you happen to have 3 other people over for dinner or have a family then they will certainly get used. You can't effectively use steak knives for most prep work, though so that means you need 1 good Chef's knife (8" or longer) If you need something NOW then order this or try to find it locally. [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-47521-10-Inch-Fibrox-Handle/dp/B0000CF8YO/ref=sr_1_3?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1342368794&sr=1-3&keywords=R.H.+Forschner]Amazon.com: Victorinox 47521 10-Inch Chef's Knife, Black Fibrox Handle: Kitchen & Dining[/ame] Best knife for the money, period. These are the knives that tons and tons of culinary schools provide and/or what tons of chefs all over use because they are durable, have the potential to be actually sharp, and are CHEAP. The handle can probably withstand being run in the dishwasher all the time too, which is more than you can say for wood handled knives... The only other knives you really need besides a Chef's knife is a small (4-5") pairing knife and a serrated bread knife. You could buy this set (Chef, pairing, slicer) but the slicer would most likely go un-used... [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Victorinox-46892-Fibrox-3-Piece-Chefs/dp/B0000CF99O/ref=sr_1_4?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1342368794&sr=1-4&keywords=R.H.+Forschner]Victorinox 46892 Fibrox 3-Piece Chef's Knife Set: Amazon.com: Kitchen & Dining[/ame] Too bad they don't make a 3 piece set with a Chef's, Pairing, and Bread knife for around $50-75. I don't want to lead you too far down the rabbit hole here, but sooner or later your knives are going to get dull on you and there's sooo many different options when it comes to knife sharpening that it will make your head spin, but do some research on that before you decide what knives to get. Or at least think about it and realize that they will need to be sharpened at the very least in the next year. Otherwise, what's the point of buying new knives if they're just going to be dull and blunt.... Think about it...

dudeondacouch
The Victorinox fibrox-handle knives are fantastic, easy to clean, quite sharp out of the box, and can be easily made razor sharp. The 4" paring version can be had on eBay for like $8. I have a couple, and use them more than anything else in my drawer.
