Thinking of buying a 2008 LGT (Need Opinions!)

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forums. Today I went to test drive a 2008 Legacy GT with the automatic transmission. I'm used to driving a 2005 Pontiac Vibe (a little econobox). The Legacy was a lot of fun!

Now my question is, should I go for the automatic? Or go for the manual. I'm not very experienced with the manual, but the paddle shifters on the legacy were actually pretty reactive. However, I hear a manual is more fun.

Also any other advice you have for buying a LGT.

Totally personal choice here. I love my MT and specifically sought it out when I purchased mine.

I have been driving mine for just about 5 years now and absolutely love it! Good luck and welcome to the forums.

I know how to drive a manual, however, I'm not that great. The automatic was a lot of fun though. I'm going to take it for another ride and really try to push it and see if the paddle shifters hold up to my fun expectations.

What kind of results can I expect from installing an accessport??

Manual, auto you will be bored within a week like I was. 3 days to be exact

AP, reflash, tiny bit of an increase that will be felt but nothing to be excited about or make you say wow.

Manual the way to go for the fun of rowing your gears, connecting with the car, keeps you busy and alert etc, auto if you just want to sit back, cruise and let the car shift when it wants.

Whatever you decide have fun and best of luck.

Keep stock, Stay rich

Access port should add some. Or you can email the serial number to Cobb and get the Race software for a laptop for free, This allows you to tune every aspect of the ECU.
If you woke up today, you have another chance to do it right.

Exactly what he said.

Automatic = for the convenience/worry-less/lazy

Manual = fun/rev-matching/keeps you alert

When you are looking at the car, take a look under the hood to see if there is evidence of past upgrades... missing engine cover or turbo heat shield are usually a dead giveaway of previous work. Also, ask for service records to make sure that the oil has been changed regularly and has just been generally maintained properly.

As for auto/manual that is completely up to you. I always vote for manual because it is a ton of fun to row your own gears and you have way more control of your car. If you decide you want a manual, I wouldn't worry that you aren't very good at it now - you will get better. (I bought my first manual before I knew how to drive it). That being said, manuals could be harder to find. Good luck!

Thanks a lot everyone! I'm going to give the car another drive and then see if I could find a manual in the area to drive. I guess that's the only way I will know what I want. I just hope the one I looked at doesn't get sold.

I do have to say... the LGT is A LOT more fun than my Vibe.. It actually moved when I pressed the gas.

It also seems like hexmods will be releasing their throttle body mod for the 2008-09 this year so that will definitely make the auto more enjoyable. From what I heard, it's comparable to the manual as far as shift speeds.

Don't worry about not knowing how to drive a manual. Anybody can learn to get it moving in 15 minutes and you'll be just fine at it after a week of owning it. It's way more fun. The only reason to ever get an auto over a manual is if you do a ton of stop and go traffic on a regular commute. Enjoy. Welcome to LGT.com.

I would also consider how preoccupied you are driving. The more "things" you need to do while driving the more I would suggest you lean towards an auto just because it will free up some resources.

I used to be a daily latte' drinker in the mornings and even though I can steer laps with my knees, eventually I would have to set the coffee down and eventually I would end up spilling or dripping or, or, or....

I am back to just "Driving" the car now and glad that it's a manual, but that's my priority at the moment. When I want to preoccupy myself while I'm driving, I hop in my wife's Pilot.

I have also heard other folks with paddle shifters that the coolness factor ends within the first week go to just regular gas/break driving with their automatics.

Just something to consider.

How are you going to be driving the car? Stop and go commuter traffic? I wouldn't thank you for stick in those conditions.

Since the stock car doesn't handle very well we opted for an auto. I typically associate the desire to have a manual gear box with performance.

The wife primary drives it, and prefers auto - though she can drive a 6sp. On road trips it's just nice to put your foot down and go. We don't use the tiptronic feature much. Brakes are cheaper than tranny. I do find a huge difference between normal 'D' and 'D sport' which raises the shift points.
