1disco
I Just got my wife 2005 Legacy GT Wagon 5eat and I was wondering if there were any ideas for better fuel mileage? gets about 20-21, has 69k on it. When do I change the spark plugs? Where can I get the plastic under Belly Pan for under the engine? Any other Maintenance concerns? Thanks
Berzerklo
Depending on driving style and use (highway/city/mix), that is pretty much par for the course. Government fuel economy rating for the vehicle is: 17 city/23 hwy/19 combined http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=21065 In terms of maintenance, check the oil every other fill up and keep it topped off. Has the 60k mile tune up been completed? That should have covered most of the usual maintenance items up to this point. About the only other thing you can do to get MPG's is accelerate slower, stay out of boost and check tire air pressure. Turbo cars with full time AWD just don't have spectacular fuel economy. LosAngelesLGT
Contact a tuner and get DEtuned. Do a 2.5i transplant.
Nrw
stop measuring mpg and measure smiles per gallon.
1disco
Thank you all for all the responses on the MPG and maintenance questions. I do agree on the smiles per gallon, but I am really not driving it, I am just filling it up. I drive a GMC Sierra 3500 Dually Crew Cab, Utility Body Diesel and I get about 15.5 on the high way, weighing in at 9500 lbs. I just thought the Legacy may get a few more MPG's than it does. Thanks again.
ChemicalWaste
I get better gas mileage with a tune, however it pretty much defeats the purpose of saving money on gas because you spent money on a tune. It pretty much comes down to how heavy the right foot is.
halwith
It sounds like your wife might be enjoying the boost. Why dont you get yourself a prius and let her have her fun?
stanjk3
When do I change the spark plugs? Where can I get the plastic under Belly Pan for under the engine? Any other Maintenance concerns? Thanks If you want better MPG, trade it in for a 2.5i or go buy a Prius. 60K miles, stick with the OEM NGK Iridiums. You should be able to get one at any dealer, but if you want an aluminum one Fred Beans has them. http://www.fredbeansparts.com/index.php/gtspec-subaru-legacy-gt-aluminum-front-under-tray.html Don't get soap in the intercooler. Don't try to let your oil go to 7500 miles, IIRC Subaru changed it to 3750 miles. Rotella T6 5W-40 is IMO the best bank for the buck synthetic oil for turbo Subarus. rob-2
Drive slower and pick up better habits. No point spending money to 'save' money

lee07
That's not too bad. It is colder outside, so you will lose about 1-2 mpg just because of the colder weather just like I am. Also what size tires are on the car? If not 215 then that could be why too but 20-21 is not bad. You could do the spark plugs if you want. It should help a little, about 1/2 mile more per gallon. I'm down to 22.5 mpg now because of the weather. Use to be
LGT For ME
^cold weather causes the car to run rich at start up until the engine is fully warmed so if she's making short trips the mpg will be worse, that and if your on 91 the winter blend of gas with more ethanol will kill a mpg or two. I bet it will get 2-3 mpg better when the weather warms up and summer 91 gas
