Fair price for LGT a with blown motor?

Recommended Posts

hello everyone, i was wondering if anyone knew what a fair price for an '05 LGT with a blown motor. the car has 130,000km's on it, it's an automatic, and im unsure of the condition of the turbo. the rest of the car seems to be in great shape, no rust. the seller is asking $5000, is this too high/low? just curious if its a good deal or not. thanks for the input!

This could either be a very good deal or a very bad deal. You would need to know why the engine is blown, whats blown and is there any other damage. A new engine will run you at least a couple thousand. If you going to install it yourself that will save you about a grand for the install.

But to be certain you will have to provide us with a little bit more information.

the woman selling it tells me the "connecting rods are gone"... as far as i know no one has pulled a head off to check the cylinders and heads for damage. i'm assuming the turbo self distructed and blew up the motor as its the third turbo on the car ( two replaced under warrenty). im hoping the heads are in good enough condition to be machined. ive priced a short block and a vf52 turbo. im guessing this will be a worst case senario for the engine.

i realize that $7500 is alot to repair this vehicle. i am planning on doing this replacement myself. however i do not own this car yet... im just curious what others have paid for the car with the blown engine/turbo. just want to know if the sellers asking price of $5k is fair...

Offer 4500.

Last time I checked EJ257 short blocks were $1600, vf52 from Mike or Jake at http://www.AZPinstalls.com was $1030 shipped.

Do you have all the tools needed?

The heads can run up to a grand dependiing on what they need. The auto parts stores list some heads for in the 300's but I don't think anyone has reviewed them yet.

You'd still need a gasket set and timing belt kit.

~$4000 for a decently assembled shortblock. Less if you do it yourself or buy used (with its attendant problems)

~$1000 for a new turbo.

~$500-1000 for misc parts (gaskets, hoses, etc)

~$500-2500 to replace all the messed up stuff from the last 3 rebuilds.

~$1000-3000 labor charges (machining costs still apply unless you have fully equipped home shop)

Been there, doing that. new shortblock spun a rod bearing after 15 minutes runtime.

Car was worth 10-12k KBB with a good motor. It'll be worth 10-12 KBB when done. I'll have spent 18k, maybe more.

Unless you can get a good deal on the motor rebuild or want to work on it yourself, buy a car with a working motor.

I would say my $.02, but the rebuild has taken all my money. :-)

if i see a lgt auto or manual with blown engine for 4k or less i buy it instantly

Yea, but knowing you, you'd do something crazy like put and Hemi in it.

uh.. hemi ... no i like things with power potential and not the size of a pick nick table

How big is that new Ford V8 Ford engine...or a 3.5 Acura engine with nice big turbo.

im looking for a project i guess. i found out today from the mechanic who looked at the car, that the #2 connecting rod spun a bearing. he is unsure of the condition of the turbo. i checked with a local machine shop and its $600 to rework the heads. not sure on how much to regrind the crank, but i doubt im into short block pricing.

You'll still need rings, honing, disassemble, reassemble, may be a rod, main and rod bearings.

Most the cost of that is why people just get a oem short block. $1600
