5EAT: Excessive Shift Shock

Recommended Posts

It started about 2 weeks ago, on WOT from a standstill, 1st-2nd shift is smooth, but the 2nd-3rd shift has excessive shock, either in D, Sport or Manumatic.

So I was browsing techinfo.subaru.com and found a Service Manual Correction, attached, for this exact symptom and I've scheduled an appointment next week.

Anyone else have this problem ?

Didn't think I had it . . . . until I read your post! Now I'll be paranoid if the shifts don't feel right.

I assume "shift shock" is an abrupt shift as opposed to a smooth shift?

BTW, after reading those Service Manual Corrections, I have new found respect for today's auto tech's. Man, that stuff's fairly complicated.

You may not feel it at slow speeds since the poor contact is not broken, instead at WOT the torque and body rock causes the contact to break and the shift to not happen smoothly.

A smooth shift is the shift between 1st->2nd under WOT in Sport Mode, not Manumatic.

I get the shift shock on the shift between 2nd->3rd under WOT in Sport Mode, feels like gears are not meshing correctly, then they pop in and I experience drivetrain shock in that instant.

Basically, in my case when I do a 0-60 run in Sport Mode, first shift is smooth, second is not.

I always drive mine in manual mode. What I noticed since the beginning is that when in 1st gear with no throttle in a traffic situation, for instance, it feels like the car will stall, so I have to leave it in 2nd gear. Anyone experienced this? Could this be a related issue to melayout's?

Reproduced it to the main Subaru tech at the dealer and he said it is normal operation since it only happens under WOT and not under partial or low throttle.

He explained that the TCU adapts to your shifting style and tries to give you maximum performance, and that the shock is from extra line pressure that is pushing the clutchpack in the 5EAT to give you a good engagement. I asked, "So as long as I routinely maintain the transmission, it would last? So nothing is being physically damaged, e.g. gears, clutchpack?" and he replied, "Yes".

I also asked about synthetic fluid for the 5EAT, and he said he will research and find out what is available and recommended I flush the tranny fluid at my 30k.

Cliff Notes- If this happens only under WOT, then it is normal operation. It this happens under mid and low throttle, then it is not normal operation.

I will reset the ECU to see if that erases the TCU driving style history and see if it still does that.
