Subaru Radio Digital Control Data Decoded

Regarding text - I'm certain the changer is doing all the MP3 decoding and text reading - what I don't know is if when it sends that title info to the radio, it's in some universal format that non-mp3 radios would still understand and be able to display text too...only time will tell. It's possible non-MP3 radios are not programmed to understand the text data, but my hope is that they're all just programmed the same and the only difference is the CD changer. Even without text - basic next/prev control and track data combined with automatic handling of input source would be a nice improvement over the current solutions.

It would be interesting to see what non-mp3 HU displays if you use mp3-capable cd deck with it (assuming pinout and connectors are the same).

Also, I wonder how much info is available out there on Panasonic/Technics (all Matsushita) audio equipment data formats. This could be of some help. I would assume that all CD decks made by Matsushita would use the same bus & data format. If this is the case, then you can tap into some accessories they may have available for stationary CD decks and amplifiers.

PS. Anyone playing with logic analyzers in their spare time has my earnest respect :)

They aren't the same. The MP3 CD changer has one or two more wires in the ribbon cable/connector than the non-MP3 one does. I learned this the hard way, in my experiments with junkyard P-204UHes... :spin:

umm, so it's back to wiring diagrams then. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out what those additional wires are (HU schematics are out there..)

Oh ... holidays...

I love and hate you so much. So - no, no progress. And to make things more complicated, I'm in the midst of trying to both sell my current car (Audi) and buy another car (LGT - from a forum member no less). The good news is that hopefully I'll be a Subaru owner again soon. The bad news is, between friend's cars lent to me that self-destructed on the way home today - and ebay joys - and work - and holiday fun - and trying to buy this other car - and my pregnant whiny wife (as she puts it), things have slowed down.

BUT! I promise - I'll be back on it very soon...just not this week.

Oh... I should mention - I tried plugging a '08 mp3 CD player into a '05 radio...and...I think I destroyed the '08 cd player. It doesn't seem to respond anymore. I'll play more with that later - and it's still possible the reason it didn't work is that it's from an '08 and not a '05 VDC Outback or SpecB...but...not very encouraging for cross-compatibility either way.

Minor update - finally set aside some time to put together a breakout board for this bluetooth module. If you can't tell from the dime - these traces are insanely small. Took me the better part of a whole evening to solder on the 30ga wires you see (and keep re-counting traces to make sure I put them in the right places).

Next I'll probably try to set up some basic comm's and make sure I can control it & connect to it via BT w/my phone or something. Maybe I can do that this weekend.

Then I'll probably hop back to the radio & try starting up the radio with only my board connected - spoofing it into thinking a CD changer is there. Speaking of the CD changer - anyone know of a source where I can get a 05/06 MP3 radio? (I think the pn's are P201-UE & P203-UE) I think I bricked my '08 MP3 radio, but I don't think I could have used it anyway.

One day i'd love to see you tackle the whole hvac controls on the gt ;) (wishful thinking, i know its a pita)

Actually now that I own a Subaru again (05 LGT), this is definitely on my TODO list. But, I want to finish this first if I can.

Just to let you know I'm still on it - I have been working on coding the comms between the microprocessor and that bluetooth module - progress is slow, I've been really busy lately & will be spending this weekend wrenching on the LGT, so I'm not sure how far I'll get, but it's at the forefront of my mind - really want to get this up & running!

FYI - still working on this almost every night. The module so far has not responded to any commands I'm throwing at it, but I still have one more idea to try. It's possible I received a dead module though - I will probably give it to an electrical engineer friend with better diagnostic equipment today or tomorrow to see what's up. Hopefully he can get it kicking and then I can jump back on dev for the radio.

I finally put all the symptoms together tonight and successfully initialized the bluetooth module. Hooray! I threw a few commands at it, paired my phone, connected to A2DP...had to stop there unfortunately but everything looks great. Will post a vid of streaming audio tomorrow hopefully. Cheers.
