Filtered Turbo Oil Supply Line Kit (w/ Instructions)

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Received my kit today.

I order the 2 hose kit as I didn't really understand/see the need to replace the 3rd line that runs under the intake manifold.

I read the instructions but thought they were lacking a bit. I was really confused about the first line saying remove the oil supply banjo bolt remove the screen and reinstall the bolt. I didn't think we were reusing any bolts so this first line item in the instructions really confused me what the heck it was talking about.

A combo of the instructions and reading this site was what I needed to get the job done.

All in all the job was super easy and only took about 45mins once I got setup. I was even able to leave the stock intercooler in place. The only dis-assembly I had to do was remove the intake tube, engine cover and the side of the air filter box that hold the MAF sensor.

Tools required.

17mm socket (valve cover banjo bolt, cap for old turbo oil supply line)

2 17mm open end wrenches (for loosening the old oil supply hard line union)

14mm socket (turbo old banjo bolt)

10mm socket (old oil hardline bracket bolt)

9/16" open end wrench (oil line fittings)

9/16" socket (new turbo banjo bolt)

11/16" socket (new valve cover banjo bolt)

Blade screwdriver (for removing intake hose)

Phillips screwdriver (for removing popits on engine cover)

2 socket extensions (for reaching the turbo banjo bolt and the valve cover banjo bolt)

Allen wrench (can't remember what size but required for the filter support bracket)

I may have needed a 5/8" socket and a 12mm socket too but I can't remember where I used them or if I even used them.

Just bought this yesterday and figured I'd install despite still running the stock VF40. May be interesting to see if it increases the life of a VF40..... Nonetheless, I'll be prepared for a BNR when/if the VF40 blows....

Thanks Mike for getting this together. I suspect all LGTs should be using it....

Installed.

Notes:

(1) I sprayed the jackets and bracket with some blue high temp paint before installing. Only waited a couple hours to dry..... Paint cracked pretty badly on the jackets when installed (all the twisting/manipulating) and will probably fall off -- looks like crap now..... FWIW -- just paint the bracket, if you are going to paint anything.

(2) Pretty tight fit with stock airbox. Distal end of filter/hose snugly contacts the top of the MAF->inlet hose.

Question: Some people on MNsubaru seemed to be worried that the hole in the turbo banjo bolt will provide more oil than the oil seals in the turbo can handle.

(1) Is the hole larger than stock?

(2) Is anybody concerned that the oil seals in the turbo cannot handle more pressure?

Hole is larger than stock. Designed for aftermarket turbos. If using a OEM turbo or a ball bearing turbo need a different feed bolt. OEM bolt works with OEm turbos. For ball bearing, contact manufacturer for specs.

With stock airbox, mounting filter at an angle or upside down makes more room for lines.

Paint will not stay on the lines. Jacket is silicone and flame retardant. I have powder coated many brackets. Those are made from billet 5051 aluminum.

Installed mine a few days ago, looks great and clears my jdm engine covers on that side no problems. i was surprised to find i DIDNT have a banjo bolt filter there this whole time lol. i dont remember pulling it but couldnt find one at all. thanks for the great attention to detail, i am able to wrap it up and around my intake piping so clearance is wonderful. should mount wonderfully with my 16g

That makes sense. I'll put the OEM bolt back in.

Sounds good. Will try.

Thanks Mike.

So you would recommend using the oem turbo banjo bolt with your oil line for the oem turbo?

They are cleanable. That was part of the point of using those filters. Element is 100% stainless steel. Can be cleaned with gas, solvents, air, etc. I have used many designs of stainless filters over the years. I still run a stainless oil filter in my Honda and Yamaha race bikes. Wash them and dry them and go.

Although cleaning is effective, the filter is a bit delicate (as it should be). I would like to have a back up or 2. Do you stock them? Good luck at the Fest!
