Hey Guys - New to the forum. Couple of questions!

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys -

Im the proud owner of a Black 2003 Cobra, and Im considering my new options for cars, and at the very top of my list is the 2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT. Id prefer a 5 speed manual, silver with black interior.

Couple of questions -

How rare are these cars? Ive found a couple on ebay, but none in silver, none with black interior, and none with a 5 speed manual.

Also, whose car is that on the very top of the page? Its very sleek, and Id love to own that. Im curious what type of rims, taillights, drop, etc it has.

Basically, im looking for a good starting place to find some information on these cars. Im looking for a comfortable ride that looks good, seats 4 comfortably, and actually moves fairly well!

Also, that being said -

engine upgrades. With my 03 Cobra, $1200 in mods.. a catback exhaust + CPU tuning + a new pulley and you have yourself a fast car. Ive been reading about COGG systems or whatever they are..

my question is.. a 2005 Legacy GT... with the Cogg CPU, exhaust, and both up and down pipes.. how much power will she make, how reliable will it be, and will Subaru screw me with warranty? I want to keep the warranty in tact..

Thanks, and nice site you guys have here!

- Depends on where you live as to how many you will see around. By no means is it alike an accord or camry, but i will see some here and there. More outbacks than anything really.

- Top of the page car is a JDM version. We do not get the rear wiper and trying to retrofit will be extremely expensive. No lip spoiler, unless you want to spend like 400-500 for the little bit of plastic. Looks dropped slightly and 18" wheels. Most all of this can be done aftermarket.

- Stage 2 Cobb with UP, DP, and exhaust i would think would put you somewhere near 275-300 at the wheels. Not sure, since i haven't gone that far yet. No doubt someone here currently running it could give better feedback.

As far as the warranty, it really depends on the dealer. Some will try and void it for anything, while others may embrace certain mods. This is really hit or miss. However those are some pretty descent engine mods, unless a dealer really doesn't have a problem i would expect most of those to void the warranty. Have to pay to play.

1200 in mods in the legacy aught to get you ECU reflash, and and up and down pipe -

here is the dyno from Cobb tuning with that setup

that should get you into the low 13's.

hi welcome to the board, I'm a newbie myself

Take a nice long test drive before deciding on the car is my advice, you are coming from a very different car, it will never be a cobra. It's also probably not the best choice if drag racing is your thing.

I'm not saying it won't be a fufilling car (i'm a former mustang owner myself and am completely smitten with my Suby), just that you should have different expectations from it.

Im definitely not looking for a drag racing car.

Other options Im cosidering are used jag XjRs, BMW 330s, and Infiniti G35 sedans.

I just want a car that can get up and go a bit ( trapping 100 mph would make me smile for sure, even though Im coming from a 125 mph car.. but 100 mph is quick enough! )

I just want a comfortable car with a warranty, that gets semi good gas mileage ( around 20 for the city would be nice.. I dont have a lead foot ) and rides very well, and is quiet.

Would simple mods like Filter, Catback, and both pipes ( up and down ) not really do much? I know all about pay to play, but I want to make sure the engine can handle simple mods without the possibility of blowing!

Wow, that is quite the increase with simple mods! that torque curve would make me grin if it was a very comfortable daily driver when I wasnt driving it hard..

And even your passengers would never know what you had unless you showed them. :) I love this car.

Another thing. I've found out that most people can't figure out what kind of car it is even when they're sitting in it. Of all the people I've given rides, I've had one guy recognize the Subaru symbol and say "Oh, this is a Subaru!?" Of course, no-one knows what the model is. Good thing if you're the type that likes to keep people guessing.

To be honest - thats what made me so interested in this car.

I was driving my cobra and I pulled up next to this guy at a gas station and he had a black Legacy GT 2.5 with tinted rear lights and some nice rims.

I walk up to him and say " wow, thats a gorgeous car. Audi? " and then I looked further and said wait a minute, thats not an audi..

and he said yeah, its the new Subaru.. and I just sat stunned. It had the elegance of an audi and his interior gauges looked exactly like it. He let me sit in it ( I let him rev up the ol cobra.. ) and we BS'd a bit.. he had a borla catback ( if I remember ) with a downpipe and an up pipe and he claimed to outrun Mustang GTs... then he told me he bought the whole thing brand new for $27,300 OUT THE DOOR.

I was blown away.. what a beautiful car.

Anyways, Im hoping to get $21,000 or so for my 03 Cobra, and I'm looking to spend about $23-24k on a silver with black interior limited legacy GT.. hopefully I can find something that I like, because this really seems to be the car for me.

The moment I get the car I plan on adding new wheels, tint the taillights and tint the entire car. Then I'll eventually get into the process of lightly modifying the car.. just an exhaust, filter, and CPU I believe.. I mean, cant leave it stock.. who does that anymore! :p

Ive been reading the site and some of the things are pretty new to me.. the Cogg CPU upgrade basically gives the power back to the engine that is originally found in the STi, correct? So, I basically will have the standard STi engine in my car with the Cogg Tune and basic upgrades, so the reliability would be about the same, I would imagine..

First, its COBB not cogg.. http://cobbtuning.com (Sorry, don’t mean to pick) --- Anyhow, yes the LGT uses the same block as the STi, however we get a smaller turbo and intercooler and a few other different bits a pieces. With a cobb accessport stage1 reflash it will definitely bring out a lot more potential from the car, but you’ll still fall short of STi power. (stage2 will take care of that though, for a few more $$$)

You don’t have to worry about reliability to much… these engines have been shown to handle abuse well.

Ah, yeah.. brain fart. COG is the system I have for my supercharger pulley on my Cobra.. I knew the COBB thing...

So basically the legacy GT has the same engine block, but a smaller turbo, eh?

What about drivetrain ( in the manual ) I obviously know the STi comes with a 6 speed, and the LGT with a 5, but are they different sized clutches, etc... basically, I want to know that the LEgacy GT can handle a COBB Stage 2 reflash, with an exhaust, filter, and up/down pipes.. I know with my 03 Cobra when I did basic mods, I had to replace the clutch because I was running 100 rwhp and 100 rwtq more than stock..

I pretty much have my Legacy GT built in my head.. ADR 18x7.5 Wheels, Tinted Read TailLights, COBB Stage 2 package w/ the exhaust, 15% tint all around, some type of lowering springs.

now to find a low low mileage 2005 5 speed Limited LGT Silver w/ Black Interior... thats the hard part.

Thanks a ton for your help guys.. the COBB website is answering a bunch of my questions as are the threads already started!

where are you located?

LGT has the same block and cams as the STi...it's the bolt-ons and tranny that differ. The majority of people on this board who do mods will stop at Stg 2 tunes....ECU tuning and bolt-on. Shouldn't be an issue with other systems until you go well beyond this....some have started building cars such where clutch, axles, diffs might be an issue (search for 'ShaggyGT' and 'ChuckToo' for a few good examples).
