Hemp
I need to get my main crank wheel off my 97 legacy GT and i dont have this crank wheel rench i need. Anyone have any ideas how to get it off?
BAC5.2
Automatic or manual? If it's a manual, just put a socket on the pulley and brace the breaker bar on the frame rail, then bump the starter. BAC5.2
Can you get the bolt out, you just want to get the pulley off? Hemp
i need to get the pully off. it was put on backwards
BAC5.2
How the heck was it put on backwards? Do you not have timing covers on the engine? Pry it off and replace the pulley. A very large gear-puller will do the trick. BAC5.2
Pry it free and replace it. That's really your best bet. If he put the pulley on backwards, I wonder what else he did? xero287
Stick a screwdriver in the flywheel and just break it free with a breaker bar or starter...that works every time for me.
xero287
I also recommend replacing your accessory belts as I'm PRETTY sure that the grooves didnt line up correctly since the crank pulley was on backwards.
Hemp
ya the belts are what tipped me off in the first place. I have nice new shiny ones to go on. If i pry it off wont that break the bolt in the center and screw it all together?
BAC5.2
Remove the bolt first. I thought you had the bolt off and the pulley was stuck to the crank. Remove the bolt as above. Hemp
Yea . when i try to remove the nut the whole wheel spins. Its auto so i didnt think i could lock it
BAC5.2
Sure you can. Either with a screwdriver in the flex plate, or putting the trans in neutral, unplugging the coil, and bumping the starter with a breaker bar braced against the frame rail. cseagle08
I had this same problem when installing a crank pulley on my friends '06 impreza auto. I made up a tool that looked like a giant strap wrench, only with a chain instead of spring-steel. then used an old belt to keep from scratching the pulley. worked like a charm
