Bad Brakes?

Recommended Posts

Legacy GT

60-0 mph takes something like 142 feet (Motor Trend data).

Only a couple of other cars they have tested were worse. (ex. Chevy Aveo)

And pretty much the worse for a 'sporty' car.

Heck the Dodge Durango was better

Does anyone have braking data other than MT? It's the only place I've seen it.

Maybe even their own actual test?

Does Subaru use bad pads? My experience with upgrading pads is somewhat better performance and usually heavier rotor wear. Upgrading rotors with slotted/cross drilled usually helps with fade, but if the base calibers and rotor diameter are....well just bearly adequate there's only so much that can be done. And upgrading calibers, ouch, that would be kinda expensive, not to mention the concerns with ABS.

Tires will make a differance. Bridgestone sucks, much like in F1 this year. I didn't wait unitll I saw wear get them off my car. I can notice a differance between mine and my brother's car under heavy braking. He still has the Suckstones on.

Face it folks....these Legacy brakes DO suck......worst brakes of any of the more than 35 cars Ive owned....

Ive got different tires also...

I've gotta agree. I've replaced the tires and will do pads and lines next. I want the braking of the WRX I had before the LGT...initial bite and little pedal travel.

The feel is fine I think, very linear, better for daily driving than being real touchy. I would like it if the brake booster was much stronger though. That way the pedal travel means something other pushing yourself back in your seat. I bet there's some way to hot rod that thing.. I bet...

Deer Killer, you're right on the track. Can anyone who's replaced whatever part of the brake system comment on what it did for you? For me, the effort required for the stopping power given is the main problem. I agree the brakes are linear, but very weak feeling. Sure, I want to need to stomp on 'em if I need an emergency stop (touchy brakes suck ass), but in my daily driving, I'd like a reasonable, much lesser than Subauru offers, effort for some serious sport driving bite.

So, do pads give the big help? Brake lines? Brake fluid? Does it take new calipers......please no, 'cause I can't afford that ;) . Please let us know what was your biggest bang for the buck for aggressive street driving was, and what it did for the brake performance (sometimes feel and performance are not the same).

I know everybody is going to have a diffrent opinion... Its starting over again.... My brakes have NO problem hauling the car down and making my performance 245 aenzis squeal. Thats my opinion. Take it or leave it. Some people prefer more pedal effort some less...

But I can gaurantee you one thing. Once those RE-92's are removed and replaced your braking distance will drop by at least 20 feet.

Try the Tribeca.. nice quick grippy feel but not too jerky. One of the first things I noticed next to the lack of power were the good brakes.

One of the first things I noticed is that the thing looks like miss piggy's face after got sprayed with pepper spray...

I agree.. the breaks are HORRIBLE.. I tried to get alongwith them.but took them off after about 2 weeks. Anybody that realyl wants to feel the road should practice declerating with plenty of distance to spare.. Much like manual vs auto.. knowing how much i can accelerate so i can coast down to a stop for the next light, etc is making me more attentive to the car and the road in general.

we rely on technology to much.. to make mediocre drivers better.. you will always be 1000% better driving when you ditch extra technology and feel the road again.. to know what the car is doing

To prove how good the Legacy's brakes can be, just watch the videos of Xenonk with his mad late braking skills. He gains a lot of ground by braking at the last second again and again...

You just have upgraded ss brake lines, pads, and fluid right Keefe? Oh, and crazy performance tires.

great clips, does that LGT have stock breaks? It's been a while since I test drove the LGT so I don't remeber how well it performed. Looking @ R&T's test results the LGT seems to be middle of the pack in its class. With tires and a good set of pads it should improve. I put performance firction pads from Auto Zone on my Jeep and it stops alot shorter than before.

I'm not to crazy about the initial bite of the stock pads but they work well enough (vented front and rear means good fade resistance too), tires make the biggest difference in stopping distance imho.

215's with a 7.1 inch tread width is kinda pokey for a 3300+ pound car, for comparisons sake my 02 Audi A4 with sport package had 235/45/17 Dunlop SP Sport 9000's (oem) which have a 8.5 tread plus a bit stickier in general.

I fid that in real world driving the brakes are exceptional. The few times that some dufus pulled out in front of me or I had to stop rapidly for some reason they were solid with no pedal fade and the ABS handled lockup effeciently.
