ccmac
The first one failed while living in Tucson, AZ. The mechanic found a packrat nest on top of the sensor in my '99 Outback (2.5L). Although there were no performance symptoms, he was able to repair it and extinguish the light so I could pass the state emissions test. A few thousand miles later, the light came back on for the knock sensor, and I let it go for about 10K because there were no symptoms for most of that time. Eventually the car began hesitating and displaying all the classic knock sensor symptoms. I bought a new knock sensor and replaced it to specs (angled placement on engine block, good torque). The check engine light soon went away and it drove great for a while. About 1.3K miles into a road trip, the light came back on. What might be causing these to fail? At $70-80/sensor, I'm not real excited to keep treating symptoms of a larger apparent problem. Josh
