S203 motor...

Recommended Posts

I am 90% sure that any variation of the EJ20 Series motors will fit into an 04 Legacy. The EJ series motors are all the same in terms of dimension wise. The only minor areas that you could run into would be the TMIC. S203 motors are really rare and very difficult to get a hold of. Spec C motors are a bit easier.

Mann Engineering is correct. Any subaru engine can bolt up to any Subaru transmission can bolt up to any Subaru. It's just a matter of wiring and brains :).

An engine swap into a non-turbo car is a very, very big process. HERE'S a Sport Compact Car article that outlines the general process. The wiring is 90% of the work. The engine bolts right up (with a WRX or older turbo Legacy front cross member to clear the uppipe).

Anyway, in terms of sourcing JDM engines you could try FourStarMotorsports since they're also in Canada. You could try Ultimate Racing in Canada. Or Gruppe-S in the US always gets shipments of JDM engines.

I do not believe the S203 gets a different engine. I think the ECU is tuned slightly differently over a normal Spec C. The S20_ cars have always been a bit nicer, with air conditioning and other stuff. A lot like the Spec C Limited. You'll have to brush up on your complete engine codes to be able to decipher exactly what engine you're looking at, trim level and all.....

The S203 engine is different, though in non-obvious ways. It has been blueprinted and balanced by STi, and is capable of spinning a bit higher than the standard STi engine. The turbo is also different, specced separately for the S203. Driving it, you often find yourself bouncing off the rev-limiter because it is so much smoother and quicker getting to the 8000rpm+ redline.

But for the cost (if you ever found one), you could get a standard STi Spec C motor and have it built up to make even more power and revs. Besides, if you ever do find one for sale, chances are it's just a standard Spec C motor that some enterprising individual is claiming is an S203 motor, in hopes of getting more money for it.
