the dreaded "Head Gasket" 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.2

Recommended Posts

I bought this car off my cousin for $200, looking for a project.

Its the 2.2L Engine

The car smokes (white smoke) , Runs loud, and Overheats.

I'm looking to find all the information I can about what to look for to find out if it is the head gasket and how to replace a head gasket on this engine. I read about checking the coolant resevoir after the car was running, but that won't tell me what side, will it?

I'm looking to take me time and do it throughout the spring and summer.

Any links to DYI articles or books/ other information would be Greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any help.

Outback has the 2.2? It's rare that the 2.2 head gaskets go.

Any Subaru that is overheated too often will blow the HG. Hoping that's all it does.

You'll have to also have the heads checked for warpage and if necessary milled.
