GNG_Kirby
To be honest a 2.2 is good for gas mileage. If you really want to get performace out of a Legacy around our years, I'd suggest seeing if you can get your hands on a GT or something. But if you still want to put some cash into the 2.2, I'd suggest the following- Cold air intake Lightweight pulleys Plugs and Wires (larger MM wires and better sparking plugs) MSD coil pack mod (look it up) And then start taking out some interior to lighten it up. Lol Auto or manual? -Kirby
Baddog
2.2's also have better low end then the 2.5 if I remember correctly. Go with an exhaust as well. Don't let the AUTO worry you. I did a 45mph pull on the freeway with my friend who has a 5 speed 97 Outback sport. I took him.

DOHCEJ22E1
2.2's also have better low end then the 2.5. This is true. 1st Gen EJ25Ds will get you though. They produce max TQ at something like 2700RPM. Later EJ25Ds are all midrange.

johnegg
i'm going to go out of a limb here and subject my self to abuse. you are wasting your money installing a cold air intake. the 90 subarus all come with a cold air intake. the air is drawn in from out side the engine compartment. all of the pics i have seen regarding a CAI , a k&n type air filter mounted on a shorter intake under the hood, they are drawing air from inside the engine compartment. i do not consider this ''cold air''. but lot's of folks do it and swear by it so you suit yourself. it is your money. just don't kid yourself into thinking it is a cold air intake. it may let the engine breath better, (i doubt it but i do not know), but it is not cold air in my opinion. not as cold as stock. Baddog
The ebay intake has been dyno PROVEN to give 10hp.

Baddog
The way I look at it. Regardless of if it's 10whp or not. It changes the power curve as well. That's the point of these mods. These are not High Horsepower cars but you can sure get some fun out of them and a hell of a torque curve.
johnegg
subaru went to a fair amount of expense in between the 96 and 97 model years and squeezed more HP out of the ej22. a tiny amount, from 135 to 137hp. and there is always a balancing act between power, fuel economy and emissions. emissions demands are always stealing power. if a different intake would have given them 10hp more i think they would have done it. (in 96 10 hp would have been half of the difference between the ej22, 135hp, and the ej25, 155hp. but i just don't really know.
Baddog
Think of it this way. People with LW Pulleys/Full Headerback Exhausts/$200 dollar cams/Intakes are making 110-120WHP on an EJ22. Count in the 22-25% drive train loss you have close to 155-165HP. Plus the EJ22 has a nice torque curve and low end power. Those mods add a "fun factor" to the car. Makes it more peppy. Hey if your car makes you smile after you have done some work on it. That is the best feeling. I have noticed better gas mileage with an intake. Albeit 1-1.5 it is still there. And these mods can be relatively cheap if you watch out for them. Modding it may not make it the fastest thing on the road but it will still be a peppy fun car.
