pat95
Hi! I have a 95 Legacy that I'm having some issues with. Figured I'd throw the scenario up here and see if anyone has any suggestions. Currently, my car is sitting in my driveway. For a few weeks now, it would idle roughly for a while and sometimes lose power while driving. After warming up and a restart, it would run fine. This started happening progressively more and more up until the point that it would start, rev up to about 2k rpms for 3-5 seconds and immediately stall. Trying to give it throttle would not overcome this stall. The plugs/wires were replaced this past February. I also noticed that when I pulled the air filter housing and ran it, I got a slight bit of smoke coming out of it after the stall. Also, when it finally started doing the complete stall, the AT Oil Temp light would flash 4 times. I live in northern NY, so it is getting quite cold out, and I don't know if this is coincidence that it started after it got cold, or if it's a separate issue altogether. So, anyone have any idea what this could be? Also, a 95 is OBD I right? And if so, which pins do I jump to get the codes? Any help would be greatly appreciated! pat95
MAF or fuel pump I bet. I was originally thinking possibly MAF. I unplugged it and tried to start it and ended up with the same result. Not sure about fuel pump, as the problem is really intermittent. Fuel pumps usually just go, don't they? subikid90
I have seen many that hold on for dear life a give out low pressure and cause similar issues. Once the issues start it take a little while for it to completely become toast. To test the MAF start the car and unplug the MAF and see if the car dies or comes back to life, it will run really rough but wont die. Sounds like it will be hard for you to start the car and do this though. Go to autozone and rent their fuel system pressure tester and test your system, it would rule out the fuel pump. Have you replaced fuel filter, plugs or wires in a while? Might be worth checking and replacing if necessary. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap
pat95
The more I think about it, the more I'm leaning towards fuel pump. The plugs and wires have maybe 12k miles on them.
subikid90
Those should be fine then. I think autozone has a $38 deposit on the fuel pressure gauge, that you get back when you return it. Only takes 10 mins to test it. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap

You can't check a MAF sensor by unplugging it. Your car will start, but stall out almost immediately if you're MAF is unplugged. Regardless of if its good or bad. Go ahead and test the theory on any other car that has a known working and good MAF sensor -broknindarkagain My Current Project - Click Here COME AND TAKE IT "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Turned out to be the fuel pump was junk, so yes they can just randomly stop working. I installed a fuel pressure gauge after that under the hood so I can keep an eye on it. It was the only time in 200,000 miles that the car left me stranded.
KuNomn
Mostly what Subikid90 said. The "at oil temp" light I'm not so sure, but also check all of your vacuum lines. If you had one with a small tear that was slowly getting worse and worse it would do the same thing. Especially if its the big vacuum line from the IAC to the intake.
