05 Leg GT Tranny Oil

Recommended Posts

A quick question on the tranny oil for the 05 Legacy GT. I saw on one of the write-ups that we need a 75W-90 but the picture showed an Amsoil with an LS designation. I am assuming this stands for Limited Slip. the Mobil 1 Synthetic has a designaiton of 75W-90 NS. couldn't find anything with LS.

I wanted to be sure that this was the proper fluid to use. Can someone confirm. Better to be safe.

thanks

I am pretty sure out cars have a Torsen rear diff not LSD that being said I have been told that any 75w-90 would work in the rear diff i dont think it "needs" to be synthetic. I am pretty sure you need to use the NS on the rear diff I wouldnt use the LS fluid in the rear diff personally. I would also go a step further and put synthetic as the tranny fluid. Subaru dealers use reg 75w-90 in both from what I have been told.

I am no expert or mechanic I am just saying what I was told.

edit: i would not use Mobil 1 for any of their gear oils or engine oils I have also heard bad things. I switched to Shell Rotella-T 5w-40 synthetic several years ago.

I was 0.

And I'm still a zero.

Go up to the top of the forum page and click on the Vendor button. Then click on Fred beans. Talk to the guy's there, and they'll tell you what you need. They now have Extra S again.

Buy the Subaru Extra S. I had another 75w-90 trans oil in my car at 60,000. The gears buzzed going from 3rd to 4th when I was under boost. I thought I was shifting wrong. Nope, it was the oil. I switched to extra S at 70,000 and it is like new. No more gears buzzing during a fast shift.

I heartily agree with the choice of Subaru's Extra-S for the transmission, which has been researched, used and reccomended highly.

The rear differential's LSD unit is just that, a sealed unit within the differential case. The gear oil only lubricates the ring and pinion gears so any high quality 75W90 gear oil should be fine.
