2010-11 Legacy Hella Horn Install

Recommended Posts

Well this last week I decided to order a pair of Hella Supertones from subimods.com. Also decided to order their mounting bracket and PnP harness. All that arrived today so I figured I wouldn’t waste any time.

1.First of all start off by disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery using a 10mm wrench.

2.For bumper removal I used this write up, courtesy of John A. http://abella.net/?page_id=130. I didn’t find it necessary to removal the fender well liners so that should save some time. Just use a flat head screw driver and prepare to pull about 15 popits. (It was a bit of a pain for me with all the dirt in them, so once I got them out I soaked them in a bucket of water.)

3.Once the front bumper is removed you should see something like this…..except that huge dent in the bumper . It looks like someone, with a trailer hitch, nailed my car at some point. It had to be BEFORE I purchased the car otherwise my license plate would have been all mangled up. So now I need to buy a new bumper beam. (the foam core that sits on the front was there and INTACT, just not pictured)

4.The OEM horns are located just to the left of the hood release and below the passenger headlight. Disconnect the spades attached. If you are using the SubiMods bracket you’ll need to remove the horn next to the hood release. Use a 12mm socket wrench. Probably not a bad idea to remove the other horn while you’re at it. (I had to pull out the air intake to make room for my socket wrench. Pretty quick fix though, two quick turns of the screw driver and you’ll be fine.)

5.For the SM wiring harness you will need to install a inline fuse holder and fuse. I went down to Radioshack and picked one up along with some 15amp fuses. Cut the power lead, red wire, on the harness and install the fuse holder and 15amp fuse. Go ahead and attach the Hella relay to your harness too.

6.With your new Supertones go ahead and mount them on the SM bracket using a 13mm wrench. Found it was easier to attach the wiring for the horns before installing them in the car. Remove the 12mm hood release bolt and install your new horns with bracket.

7.Find the male spade on the wiring harness and connect it to the factory female spade next to the hood release. I used a zip tie to connect the Hella relay to an open hole on the bottom of the hood release.

8.Run your ground and power leads to your battery however you want. I ran them through the upper radiator mount and below the driver side headlight to keep it out of the way. Use some zip ties to keep the wire from hanging loose.

9.Connect the power lead to the positive battery terminal and the negative to the negative terminal. If you have any extra slack in the harness loop it together and tie it up with some zip ties.

10.Reconnect your negative battery terminal and proceed to press your horn and hear the beast

11.You can now re-attach your bumper and carry on beeping.

Great writeup but FYI folks, if you're resourceful and don't mind some scratches on your hands, the horns can be installed (and old ones removed) without removing the bumper. I did it with just removing the "scoop" from the airbox and the plastic above the radiator.

did you buy your car new?

Yup bought it brand new August of '09. Car only had 18 miles on the odometer. I posted this write up in the 5th gen forum too and another member, Jsmith, mentioned his bumper has a dent in it too even though the foam core is intact.
