DIY: AUX-IN after mount + Center console removal -Legacy 2008

I often drive long distances with my Subbie.

The radio channels here in Sweden makes me literally insane!

Five songs are played in an endless loop. Hopeless.

CD changer is nice to have, but I filled it with records that I have listened through many times over.

So I thought I'd use my phone as Navi and Mp3 player (inspired by This thread ).

So I troll down to the local Subaru dealer and bought a AUX-in Kit .

The assembly instructions that came with the kit was not the best perhaps,

I think they are for the experienced auto mechanic. Not to mention the large letters on the first page: "Keep the installation manual at the dealer." :)

I searched the forums but did not find any instructions for how to remove center console on a Legacy 2007 ->

So I tried to make one.

Center console:

First, pull up Gear lever gaiter with your finger gently, while you "force up" the silver exterior with a screwdriver.

Then, just to unscrew the gear knob and gaiter comes with it..

I ran a bit of tape on the screwdriver to protect the plastic.

Pull the ashtray gently. Silver details on the sides will come out a bit.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX2.jpg

Disconnect the plug. As you can see the silverdetails came out a bit.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX3.jpg

Remove the plastic screwcovers on each side of the stereo.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX4.jpg

Pull the handbrake gaiter. Start dragging where the image shows.

Just pull it up, then pull it in-and-out and eventually remove it from the lever.

The guide recommends that you pull some fabric over the gear lever so as not to scratch your stereo when you tamper with it.

I had some foam lying around.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX5.jpg

Loosen the screws

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX6.jpg

Here is a bit tricky,

In order to release the details from each other, you need to press your thumb down and the rest of your fingers up. (As in the picture).

Drag until the white knob and "LH", "RH" details pops out.

Do the same thing on the other side.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX7.jpg

Here you have the support and "holding" pice under the console, it may help you in the removal.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX8.jpg

Set the lever in "low".

Drag off the "cap" as shown.

It pops off and a screw is hidden underneath.

Remove the screw, and pull up (off) the rest of the cover.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX9.jpg

Push forward the front seats, go back to the rear seats and remove the cover here ...

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX10.jpg

...that´s hiding a screw. Remove it.

Do not forget the other side!

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX11.jpg

Now you can remove the center console.

Grab it at the gear lever and the console´s "end" on the back and pull up a bit.

After a while you can "open up" the console as I did.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX12.jpg

The stereo:

Stereo unit is secured by tree screws.

The two screws on the top do not need to be removed.

Instead, you have three screws on each side that need to be loosened.

The two bottom of the picture ...

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX13.jpg

...and another one here, a little further into the console.

On the right side the screw attaches a "lip" which is attached to the stereo unit.

On the left side, the "lip" needs to be turned away in order to get out the stereo.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX14.jpg

Pull out the stereo a bit and disconnect the warning button.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX15.jpg

Pull the stero out some more and disconnect the plug that goes to the AC module.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX16.jpg

I sat in the passenger seat and pulled out the stereo bit half diagonally.

I disconnected the wire that was farest away from where I sat. (And illustrated)

Connected the AUX cable I bought in there (cable with black cable cover that comes from the bottom right edge of the picture).

The wire that was in the beginning was linked to the T-connector with yellow/orange/brown wire.

Center Grille:

I used a taped putty knife.

"Forcing it out" until I got my fingers behind the grille.

Did the same thing with sides (with putty knife) while holding my fingers where I first put them.

After that the whole package comes out quite easily.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX18.jpg

Disconnect the wire going to the display.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX19.jpg

I did a little "full-MOD" on the Center Grill.

I enlarged one hole out of tree in the center grille so I could get down two connectors, one micro-USB jack and a 3.5 -> 3.5.

This is for using my phone as a MP3 player and a GPS. While having the phone in the same position as the original NAVI.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX20.jpg

This is how it looks, I striped "my" wires together.

Not beautiful, but no one sees. I also mounted some foam rubber between the cables and plastic so it don´t rattle.

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX21.jpg

I pulled the cable as shown below. (The numers are hard to see on the picture).

1: I put both the AUX and "my" cable under the yellow foam.

2: At the high/low lever I striped down the AUX cable, while "my" continued.

3: "My" cable got striped down at the parking break wires.

PLEASE NOTE: AUX cable is quite short.

You can not plug it in while the center console is "open" as in the picture.

You must begin to reposition the console and when your arm just goes under the console

the wire will reach the AUX module which is mounted in the console. (Visible in the next picture).

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX12-1-1.jpg

There is a plastic piece that sits where the auxiliary module now is.

To remove it just push the plastic piece from the conter consoles inside.

I dremeld down the console a bit, so the cables could fit "between" AUX module and console plastics.

The result:

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c43/Istvan_Sz/AUX26.jpg

Enjoy!

NOTE:

The stereo won´t recognize any AUX input unless you have at least a jack connected in the AUX module

Whoa, nice writeup,

Thank you! :)

and do you have a low range transfer case?!

Do you mean the case for the High/low lever? There is none. Just take off the handle and the rubber-coverd give after a bit.

I´m not sure what you mean. Could you please be more exact?

We are jealous, because the dual range transmission is not an option for USDM (US Domestic Market) Outbacks..

Oh!

I see! In Sweden all MT´s have dual range. (What I know).

On the other hand we have microscopic engines 2.0R and no Turbo models.

Only the Boxerdiesel and the 2.5 in the new STI Racing..

The grass is always greener they say... Personally I'd like the boxer diesel and dual range manual transmission please..

Hehe, well maybe that :)

The Diesel here only comes with MT without Dual range but all the gas engines with MT have dual...

Why don´t you guys have the diesel in the US? I read something about Diesel is forbidden in US due too much emissions?

Same thing applies to a automatic ? I don't wanna force up the silver exterior so I don't break it.

Only my radio works. No aux,sat or cd.

I'm sure something is loose back there.

Edit: opened it up and everything seemed intact. Didn't kno what to do from there.

Sorry for the late answer!

I recall reading somewhere that the automatic lever i screwed to the chassis.

But I´ve been wrong before so you better check that out.

But I think you can lay the AUX cable underneath the "lever-package".

In Australia I can not buy the AUX in cable. it was a factory option but they will not sell the cable after market. I would like to make one. If you remember what it looks like is the cable just left, right and ground or is there some kind of interface? My cable will only go to glove box so AUX face plate in arm rest is not important. In you photo of the back of the stereo where you showed the wires going into T junction were these empty places or do they share slot with other wires?

Thank you for a very good post,

That aux cable is simply wiring, no interface electronics.

It's somewhat of a T-harness. It passes through the car's existing wires to the radio -- audio steering wheel controls (pins 3 and 7) and night dimming cancellation (pin 8) -- and brings in the wires from the aux jack (audio ground/shield, left, right, and aux enable). [Added: I guess it's really more of a Y-harness]

Installation instructions (PDF) attached.

The Subaru part number is H6210AG000. Someone said it was available in Australia. Price ~$120 AUD ($115 USD). Google finds a few Subaru parts vendors in Europe carrying it, including here.

If you don't have any luck finding it locally, I can build a 100% equivalent using a modified USDM Impreza aux harness, USDM Legacy/Outback aux pod, and a few extra bits.

I just walked up to the parts desk at Jarvis Subaru, Marryatville, SA and showed the guy the part number on this forum, right on my phone. He knew what it was just by looking at the part number, had them in stock and sold it to me over the counter.

$124 is pretty steep just for a few lengths of wire and a receipt but I figure it to be $4 worth of parts + $120 worth of "it took less than 45 minutes to install, came with a warranty and… just works". It would have taken me more than $120 worth of my own time to DIY the cable.

Many props to the guy who posted the step-by-step install guide. That must have saved me hours, particularly with the rediculous little, round, white clip thingy under the dual range selector.

Cheers,

Mams.
