Guest *Jedimaster* Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Most of us haven't gotten our cars in yet- if you're like me, you're already planning what you want to do to it though. I plan to NOT do anything that will negatively affect emissions, ride quality or noise levels (at least not tooooo much noise). One thing I'd like to look into and will probably be a pioneer in doing is putting the roofrails from the Legacy GT on my Outback XT. Anyone else having any bright ideas?
mmanus88 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 i will be purchasing a 2005 legacy farely soon. i will definately have to replace the rims with 18 inch, i like OZ rims a lot. will have to install a NAVI system, either from alpine or pioneer. i willl be putting in a Sirius satellite radio moduel in there, along with a new subwoofer (stock subs suck). i doubt i will change the speakers, i'm not a huge audiophile but like listening to music. if the speakers are really sucky on the legacy then i will porbably get new speakers as well. another mod will be to install the GT scoop hood (i will be getting the 2.5i limited). as for performance, i don't plan on doing naything since i'm not someone who needs a lot of speed. the 2.5i's speed specs are fine for me. after all i jsut said, i might add a body kit in the future, not sure. if i like the way the car looks after my initial mods i won't do anymore.
Guest *Jedimaster* Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Cool- you can sell me your stock subwoofer :D Do you have to pay monthly fees for a nav system? If not, I might get something like that for mine.
7stars Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Don't bother with the GT hood. Wait for a carbon fiber one, which will come with the scoop, be cheaper (no need to paint), and look better. My first mod will probably be the S-AFC in order to lean out the AFR which I'm pretty sure is going to be super rich.
CPTChaplin Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 I'm new to the idea of making any mods. As a whole the stock GT Ltd seems to have a pretty tight package. I wouldn't want to put more than $500 on top of my purchase price. You have the opportunity folks to start a mod monster, what could you change for $500 bucks or less that would improve the driving experience. For example, I figured I wouldn't change the tires until I wore out the first set. Now, I wouldn't treat them too nice, but figured get the use out of them first. Newbee Sube Mod Man, J.R. P.S. Do stock sub woofers really suck that bad? Is this a historical perspective? Do we know that the 2005 model sub woofer is a POS?
SUBE555 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 My first mod is to return as much of the rubber from those RE92's to the earth from which it came. Then I can replace those tires with some much better all-seasons for daily driving year round. Next spring/summer pending finances I will be getting a dedicated summer or even race wheel/tire pack.
7stars Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 I'm going to keep the RE92's for the summer, but when the rain starts falling, the Michelins will be ready to take over
mmanus88 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 yea i will also probably change the tires to a more reputable performance brand, toyo maybe. and to whoever asked the question, no navi does not recquire a monthly fee.

SUBE555 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 mmanus, I have a whole list of tires that I may be using and prices. I'll try to post them in another thread. From what I've seen, these are the most available and best performing options in given sizes. I'm not sure I'd want to toy with an S-AFC in a new turbocharged Subaru. The computers are good at learning when modifications are present generally, including electronic piggyback solutions. I would rather wait for one of the reflashes as I think Cobb's reflash solution in the near future will allow for user tunability. Not the cheapest thing, but considering a lot of other options, a decent value and rather safe in the same right. Just my 2 cents though. Paul might beg to differ though. ;)

Better tires is a good idea, though depending on what you go with you could certainly spend more than that. I don't know what's available right now, but you could probably get a beefier rear sway bar for a couple hundred bucks (when they are available). Other not too expensive mods would be upgraded brake pads and SS brake lines. On the power front, an ECU reflash should be under that and net you some respectable gains (reprogramming the ECU in forced induction cars usually nets a good amount of hp & torque). You might find a cat-back for close to $500 although that would be more of a sound/appearance mod with not too much hp gained (maybe 5). I don't know if your car has a MT or not, but a short shifter would be well within your price range. Subaru offers one, I'm not sure what is available in the aftermarket yet. Enjoy your car.
mmanus88 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 its not nessecarilly that stock subwoofers suck, they just generally do not cut it for people who like to listen to music loud and clearly. unless your not getting a special brand-name package deal regarding speakers in your car (like bose or mark levenson), and u want to enjoy your cars music capabilities, i reccomend investing in a new sub/amp/soundsystem
SC GT Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Mine, if I get one, will be at least 6 months off. But, just like I can imagine who the Lakers can get for Shaq, I can imagine how I would mod my Leg GT: 1. Tint. 2. Toyo Proxes TS-1s, 225/45/17. 3. STi pink springs. 4. Cobb Access Port (if available). 5. Downpipe with high flow cat, or full turboback. 6. VF34 and injectors. 7. New tires.
7stars Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004
S-AFC?
It's a fuel controller that requires a dyno to tune it correctly, although you can try to do it on your own if you have someone else's dyno and AFR figures. I wouldn't recommend it for novices, because it can be a pain to install. Nobody will be able to install these without a proper wiring diagram, so count on another $70 for the factory electrical manual. A flash will help in our cars, but you won't be able to up the boost that much, because it's already high.
SUBE555 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 7-stars, if you think our boost is high at 13.5psi for stock, what is the EVO at like 19psi then? How about a the Dahlbach racing Golf with 45psi of boost? My overall plan for my car is to be able to just dip into the 12-sec range at the track (probably similar to Cobb Stage 2 level with flash and turboback), be relatively comfortable on the road but be able to beat stock STi's on the track and in AutoX.
subey25rs777 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 If the new Legacy is running at 13.5 psi, what is the highest it can go before the fuel cut comes into play?
SUBE555 Posted June 19, 2004 Posted June 19, 2004 Well it is likely the turbocharger will run to the end of it's efficiency range around 17lbs of boost or so with a taper factor towards redline.

And perhaps some adjustable shocks with the OE springs. Some aftermarket gauges. When the warranty expires, will probably do an ECU reflash for more performance.
brady_bunch Posted June 20, 2004 Posted June 20, 2004 1. Pirelli PZero Nero M&S stock size 2. Tint 3. JDM/STi/Tein springs (lower 1-1.5") with slightly firmer spring rates 5. Reflash 6. Full turboback 7. Cobb Access Port (if available). 8. New rims? 9. JDM front and rear bumpers (if possible without spending a small mountain of cash) 10. Gialla Corsa body kid (without the headlight eyebrows)
7stars Posted June 21, 2004 Posted June 21, 2004 I peronally wouldn't recommend Toyo tires. At least in the past, they haven't had very good quality control with their top of the line tires. Pirelli, however, is exceptional. Many of their tires are quite lightweight.

They were recently awarded Tire Manufacturer of the year by SEMA. Maybe they've improved the quality control issue, since on their web site they talk about the brand new automated systems for improving quality control. -Franz The end of a Legacy http://www.youtube.com/th3franz
gtguy Posted June 21, 2004 Posted June 21, 2004 I'm planning nothing. BTW, the stock subwoofer doesn't suck if you want to play your music for yourself. If you want to play it for people in the cars around you, then you might consider it inadequate. I won't go into my "cars can't reproduce low bass in actuality" spiel again. But the stock Legacy system and subwoofer make music for the car's driver and passenger. Not sure how much more you can ask for. Kevin

And with the quiet cabin I think the Stock stereo is actually pretty good.
SUBE555 Posted June 21, 2004 Posted June 21, 2004 Amen on the stereo Kevin, my tunes are my own. I'll keep my hearing and keep it reasonable. ;) I have heard good reports on Toyo's overall as well.
