cstefanic
I'm looking into buying a 2007 Outback for a ridiculously (and I mean ridiculously) low price. Reason for that price? Salvage title. Old lady tipped it into a ditch on it's side at 10k miles, the guy selling it bought it from her with the side all damaged and then drove it for 70k more miles. Just this past week he hit a deer with it, which is the point the insurance company gave up and paid him for the car, now he just wants it gone. So, questions: Is this a bad idea? Just as a runaround vehicle, so doesn't desperately need any of the body panels replaced ASAP, though I'd like to eventually. In the pictures, the hood and windshield are actually pre-deer, so imagine the car with those parts pretty much scrapped. http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/6245/zack237.jpghttp://img841.imageshack.us/img841/2356/zack238.jpghttp://img227.imageshack.us/img227/4351/zack239.jpghttp://img155.imageshack.us/img155/5153/zack241.jpghttp://img256.imageshack.us/img256/896/zack240.jpg
alaskajoel
I'd rock that as a camping beater (depending on exactly what the dear did to it...) Just out of curiosity, what was the insanely low price? I don't think i'd pay more than 3-5k for it.
cstefanic
$3500. I figure I can get the hood, windshield, and fender on it and replaced and still be comfortable. For a fully-functioning and solid-running car, I think it's a great deal.
BAC5.2
Not if the tires are different. For $3500 plus parts, you could be buying a partially functional car that needs a new drivetrain. cstefanic
Oh, I never noticed that. I'll have to look in person and see what's up. Those pictures are a little old, so maybe it was temporary? Thanks for pointing that out!
BAC5.2
Not likely. 2 aftermarket wheels + 2 stock wheels likely means they've been like that for a while. I'd walk away, just me. cstefanic
Hmm...I'll still ask, but again, thanks for pointing that out. So the plot thickens...

Wow sure didn't notice that. With that being the case, i'd walk too...at 3500 i'd possibly pop, but with potential tranny issues, I'd walk too. You have to think...if the guy mismatched tires on it, what other maintenance did he botch? At 80k miles, i'd be a little weary.
cstefanic
Is it possible that even with aftermarket wheels/tires, they can still have the same outer diameter and therefore not be causing any sort of differential issues?
2005legacy2.5i
So what did you decide?
cstefanic
Long story short: Went up to Spokane, drove the car, thought it was a good deal. Told the guy I could pay for it the next day (had to transfer the cash). Called him when I got back to Moscow about 2 hours later to set up payment details. Apparently the guy that drove it right after me walked up with cash, so the guy sold it to him. Basically, seller was an asshole, buyer got a good deal, and I'm back in the market for a runaround. Anyone selling a low mileage, any year, Forester for around $6k?
2005legacy2.5i
Ah that's sh*ty, but thats the way it goes. I'll let you know if I see anything, but I am in Denver, CO I'm not sure if that is in your reach?
cstefanic
Thanks for the offer, but I'm really looking for something in the Spokane-ish area. Really don't have the time for a little trip to pick up a car (as much as I'd like to!).
