Koni Shock/Strut & Epic Engineering Spring Install

Recommended Posts

I have 1 set of front bodies. The rest of my core parts are gone. Once again, cores never returned.

I have a PM (or email) asking about a quote for the bodies I have with Konis installed. I just need to get a updated price on the konis as I have none in my own stock right now.

But in general, the service is dead. Cant keep it up when I lose the cores. Sorry.

Same here, we keep 1 set of built Konis in stock for the LGTs and will swap em out for locals. Shipping becomes too cost-in-effective by the time we get the cores back.

^Yes sir... I tried.

A good 10 members got pre-set up Konis and springs before the core parts all disappeared. It started slowly with just things like dust boots not coming back, then progressed to the entire set ups. Same type of thing with the fuel pumps. 8 cores lost over the last 2 years. Thanks to DW we dont have to worry about modding Walbros and assemblies anymore (yay!).

I try try to keep one set on the shelf ready to go for local customers who drive in.

Sorry all. But Mike (AZP) is right. Shipping is ridiculous right now and really makes it expensive.

The only way I would do it these days is to send out the Koni's inserted in cores and the core charge would be equal to brand new KYBs, in the event that we don't get back the original cores, I could go out and purchase KYBs to replace the cores with.

I try to be "more than fair" and it tends to bite me in the arse. I agree with you. Core charge needs to be equivalent to replacement cost of every part required for return.

As a customer, I would be unhappy with such a large core charge. So, as a vendor, I think it best to just not even go down that road.

Mike, I hope you and the AZP crew had a merry and safe Christmas. Happy New Year! To you and everyone back home in the tri-state. I hope 2012 is the best year ever for AZP.

Mikey, I agree, as a customer, I would not want to pay such a high core fee either. The only advantage is that they would know they are installed correctly.

I saw the pics of the shop out West, looking real good! Next time you are in the tri-state, you need to stop by. We took over the entire building on the left side of the lot and built out a bonefide waiting room and an office as well. Just picked up a second lift 4post drive on with slip plates and we just got our bluetooth heads back for the alignment machine we picked up from a closed shop. Once we have finished training and practicing, we will be doing full on alignments and corner balancing.

If i ever get out to West, i cant wait to see the shop. Happy New Year and lets make 2012 a great subie year on both East and West coast.

I used Mike's service back in April. In my case I shipped my Konis and Epics to Mike from Fred Beans Parts because I paid with Subie Bucks. Mike assembled them and shipped them to me, then I had a located speed shop install them. I shipped the cores back to Mike. Shipping cost almost $235, but becasue Mike's assembly charge was so reasonable it worked out less expensive than the locate SS doing the whole thing.

Overall it was a great experience. I had to wait a little longer because of the shipping from East coast to West coast and back, but I got to know Mike a little better through PMs. It was well worth it. The car handles great and it still puts a grin on my face when I take the curveys. Thank you MIke for a job well done.

Come on people, get those cores back to Mike. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

I have a question for Mike of AZP.

My son has an '08 LGT with OEM struts/shocks with Cobb springs. What would it cost him to get into the Konis with his Cobbs installed? You would have cores coming back to you since you'd have his car at your shop. Please let me know since he'll be ready in the next several weeks. He lives in Allentown, PA, so he could go to your shop on a Saturday.

Thanks.

We charge $295 for the Koni install and as you said since we are doing the install here in house no issue on the cores. Basically we keep a set pre-built so when he comes in we'll take his new konis and his original struts and put our pre-built ones into his car.

Just let us know when he is ready. We could do it on a Saturday or even on a week night if he wanted to do that (we are right down I78 from Allentown).

Nice! Would have gotten a bendpack or mohawk if we could have afforded it. Ended up with an atlas unit. Definitely spend the $ and get the slip plates built into the ramps. Makes alignments much better.

So $295 includes taking your preassembled Koni struts in your core strut housing, installing his Cobb springs and assembling w/tophats, etc., and using his Koni rear shocks, assembling with his Cobb springs and installing the assembled Koni/Cobb spring setup into his car? He would hand over his new Koni front strut inserts and his cores. Do I have it right? Please explain. I just want to understand what $295 includes.

Again, he's not using a Koni/Epic setup. You would need to disassemble his cores and assemble the Konis with his Cobb Springs.

Thank you for your patients.

Yuppers. We only charge 200 to swap out regular struts. The extra 95 is due to the koni assembly and cutting. So yes, his springs and strut hardware with his rear konis, and our front konis with our housings will run 295 + his front core and his front konis. :)

Thanks Mike. I'll relay the info to him. I think he has an alignment guy back in the Allentown area. I know he uses a little negative camber for better turn-in. I have -.5 degrees on my koni-epic setup and it works well.

Shouldn't one let the springs settle for a couple hundred miles before getting an alignment? I've read that even though they've been on the car they still need to settle if you take them off the car again. Truth or fiction?

Thanks for your time in responding to my inquires.

  • 2 weeks later...

I am thinking about putting koni's and springs on my car and was wondering if any of the OEM parts listed below can be reused. So if say for instance the front top mounts are in good condition, should I still replace them or can I roll with them.

12. To assemble the front struts you will need the following hardware:

A) Koni front shock assembled into strut housing

B) OEM dust cover (P/N 20322AG00A, qty.1/side)

C) OEM top mount (P/N 20320AG00A, qty.1/side)

D) Nut & Lock-washer from Koni kit

E) OEM bump stop (P/N 20321AA201, qty.1/side)

F) OEM conical washer (P/N 20326AA000, qty.1/side)

G) OEM upper spring seat (P/N 20323AG00A, qty.1/side)

H) Epic Engineering front spring

19. To assemble the rear shocks you will need the following hardware:

A) Koni rear shock

B) OEM dust cover (P/N 20372AE00A, qty.1/side)

C) OEM upper spring seat (P/N 20375AE00A, qty.1/side)

D) Nut & Lock-washer from Koni kit

E) OEM top mount (P/N 20370AG00A, qty.1/side)

F) Epic Engineering rear spring

G) Lower spring perch from Koni kit

Everything can be re-used unless it is worn or damaged.

Yup, what Mike said is true. However I would strongly suggest replacing the strut tops in the front as we have seen most of them wear out in about 80k miles of driving.

Has been done many times. H&R are nice springs. Firmer than Epics. With the adjustable of the Koni, they can be dialed in nicely. The drop is lower than an Epic, but higher than a Swift or S-Tech.

Agreed, i really like the h and r springs. Ran them before my STi pinks on my LGT wagon.

Get in touch with koni directly. They will replace it but i believe you have to pull it, send it in then they replace it. If you want one before you pull it they charge a fee iirc.
