Jeffzguy
What's the little black button on the top or forward edge of my auto trans base plate, up near the coin ledge...
Legacy Wagon
If you have your car off and hold the button down you can shift into different gears. It's made for shifting into neutral so you dont have to have your car on. I'm assuming you're referring to the one that's directly above Park on here, right? http://cdn1.ioffer.com/img/1113894000/_i/6486914/1.jpg

Liberty10
(Gotta love the search feature in forums) LW, my shifter won't work at all unless I use the black button. What's going on with that? I am obviously used to it but wondered if that's a sign of something on the horizon. (Maybe I don't want to know.. lol)
Legacy Wagon
Now are you talking about the black button on the side of the shifter itself or the little black button above park with the orange stripe?
Liberty10
I'm referring to the the one that's actually on the outside edge of that whole shifter set-up.. it's way up at the top.
Legacy Wagon
Yeah. You have to hold that down just to get the car in gear? What happens when you push the button on the shifter?
Liberty10
Yep. It's been that way since I inherited the car. I can't remember what it does when I push the shift button itself, it's been too long since I even tried it that way. Maybe hitting potholes fixes things? lol I'll check it out and share a detailed, intensive, engineer-approved report!
Legacy Wagon
Haha, good deal
Liberty10
Short version: nothing happens.. lol The shifter will not move at all, into any position, unless I depress that little button.
Legacy Wagon
Hmmmm. Does the button move in or does it just stick? Inside the button should hit a little bar with an edge on it and push it down to allow the shifter to move freely. If it's stuck you may be able to take it apart and find out what's wrong. If it's not stuck you may be able to take it apart and find out what's wrong
Liberty10
Yikes, I dunno about trying that.. Just the thought of messing the whole thing up and then not even having a car to drive? Can't I just spray it with WD-40? lol
Legacy Wagon
Doubtful As long as you dont lose the screws you should be fine though. It is kind of a pain. I probably wouldnt mess with it as long as your black button works.
Liberty10
I think you're right. No sense inviting trouble! What else should I fix? The leaky seal on the sunroof? (moonroof?) Not sure why it's called a moonroof.
Legacy Wagon
I think if it moves up and back it's a moon roof. If it just opens straight up it's a sunroof. Or something like that. I never use mine on the RS anyway. If you dont use it you could always try running a heavy bead of some clear silicone around the edge and disable the button so you wont accidentally ruin that much. If you use it then you may just have to live with it. Although I think there's drain rails on the moonroof and they can get clogged. You may have to look it up, but if you cleared those out it may not leak anymore.
Bdubs
The shift lock relay probably blew. If you press the brake, you should hear the relay engaging the shifter so you can begin selecting gears. Years of use probably has taken its toll.
Liberty10
Shift lock relay? Is that a big deal to replace, Bdubs? I'll research that one, too.
Legacy Wagon
I didnt even think of the possibility of that part. No clue why, but yeah. Makes sense and it could be a definite possibility.
Liberty10
My shifter is only locked when it is in PARK. Once I'm on the road, with car running, I don't need to use that little black button. I wonder if the shift lock relay suggestion is still a logical thing to consider then?
Legacy Wagon
I'm sure it's a good possiblity. None of the other gears need you to depress the brake to shift into them. Have you tried shifting into 1st or 2nd using the button on the shifter?
Liberty10
The main button on the shifter or the lower (shorter) one? Either way, no, I haven't tried that yet. not intentionally
Legacy Wagon
The big main one. The one below it is for manual mode. Give that a shot next time you're at a stop light. I just want to see if the button even works. You can downshift to third from drive, but you cant go lower without the button (unless you put it in manual mode, but there's no real use for that in this situation cause it wouldnt tell us anything)
Liberty10
It shifts just fine from reverse, to drive, etc.. after, I depress the main button on shifter. That's just the normal way though, right?
Legacy Wagon
Yep. That's what you'd normally do. I'm thinking that dude was right. Either way I guess it's not too big of a deal unless a killer's after you and you panic. But then again your car wouldnt start in that situation anyway so I guess it's irrelevant.
