kaz98gt
definitely ask if there's been any recent work done to it. I'm not too familiar with the older legacys, but I'm going to imagine that it has the 2.2 in it? And fwd was common back then, as this was before subaru decided to go with awd for all of their models.
grmorrow04
Based off what I can find online, it looks as if it has a 2.2. How is that motor reliability wise? Does it have a timing belt?
subikid90
It has a timing belt. The EJ22 is an awesome motor that didnt have any problems. Timing belt should be replaced at 110k. Sounds like the car is due for one right about now. The timing belt job costs about 1-1.5k from a shop or you can do it for about 250ish and a weekend. -Subikid90 1997 Legacy GT 5spd & EJ251 w/EJ25D heads ~10.5CR 1998 Legacy GT Limited waiting for EJ22T hybrid swap
grmorrow04
How bad is it to do one myself? Need the special tools to keep the cams locked in place and all that?

Platinum_Racing
Just an FYI, you had the right forum the first time. The car you're looking into is in fact a first gen Legacy. I only mention it because the first gen forums are really slow, and we appreciate all the traffic we can get. Its so slow that I've recently started trolling around on these 2nd gen forums myself, and I don't even own a second gen!
grmorrow04
I guess it won't mean squat if I can't get any return phone calls/emails! If the car isn't available anymore, just let me know!
Platinum_Racing
My sentiments exactly. Or even worse, when you're selling a car and the guy says hold onto it for me without a deposit, then he never comes back. That's one of those things I'll never do again.
