BobJ Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 I have a 2004 Subaru legacy Hatchback and have started to notice a strange vibration in the front end. Between 25 and 35 MPH, the steering wheel wants to rock back and forth, then it goes away. I checked the lugs- all tight. Brakes discs dont seem out of spec either. Is this just a wheel balance problem or am I looking at something more serious? Tires have nt taken a hit yet due to wear- this has just started. Any help is greatly apprecited!

I just got under the vehicle and see unusual wear on the inside of both front tires- a toe- in front end alignment issue it appears. Looks like time for 2 new tires and an alignment! Lovely! See ya later $300!
xt2005bonbon Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Looks like time for 2 new tires and an alignment! ^Keep in mind that all 4 tires should be exactly the same and should all have about the same amount of tread left. If not, you will ruin and wear out your drivetrain prematurely. Quote from http://www.subaru.com technical faqs: Do I have to replace all four tires on my AWD Subaru? All of the tires on your AWD Subaru must be within 1/4 of an inch of rolling circumference (part that touches the road). This is because of our All Wheel Drive System. Proper rotation of the tires at the appropriate service intervals will increase the life expectancy of your tires. This will also ensure that all four tires stay relatively equal in their tire tread wear. When vehicles are serviced, tires should be routinely checked to ensure that the alignment and tires are in good working condition. Good luck.
Massguy635 Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 Yes, the wobble I would expect is shifted cords in the tires. And absolutely replace all 4 unless the other ones are like new. And we really mean like new. These drivelines are durable and precise and will require all 4 tires turning the exact same distance per revolution. A tire shop installed 2 of one size and 2 of another. Even though it was only off by fraction I could feel the difference. I only made it down the road a mile out and a mile back the car has never been the same. This was years ago with my mothers 03 impreza that sports 4 snow tires. Even though it took a beating it still goes places most trucks dont so luckily it did not cook it. Cut the tire guys slack if they push for all 4. They have the right intentions. Good Luck
