berg0171 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Hello, I own a 1998 subaru legacy GT 2.5 with around 206k on it. I've started to notice oil spots on my drive way from my car. Around the same time I've also noticed a LARGE increase in my cars fuel consumption, I'm getting horrible fuel economy now and the tip of my exhaust is black. I brought my car to a Subaru dealership to have it looked at and this is what they found: Power steering pump leaking Left front wheel bearing noisy Oil pan (possible leak, lots of oil) Possible oil leak from cam seals Separator plate leaking oil Both tie rod boots are ripped Valve cover gaskets are leaking oil Large temperature difference before and after cat I was told that with parts and labour it would cost around 3 grand to have everything fixed. I paid alittle over 3 grand for the car itself and can't justify putting that kind of money into it. My question is out of all of these problems which are related to the poor fuel economy and what are the most important ones to have repaired?
JimmEh Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 replace the cat, it's probably clogged as far as the oil leaks, just keep a very close eye and keep it topped up.
amp27 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 really most these problems are simple. you could (basic hand tools) do the tie rod boots, oil pan. cat maybe. and those gaskets can be replace with out taking the motor. find a friend or someone personal to do the work. alot cheaper
