ktm200 Posted July 24, 2010 Posted July 24, 2010 I have an 09 legacy SE and I'm not really a fan of the plastic steering wheel. I do however like the leather wheels on the GT. Would I need to replace the entire wheel or the outer "ring". Also anyone know where I can get a leather wrapped wheel from? Thanks
ktmrider Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Just picked up one of these here in Japan: http://www.nengun.com/auction/item/d103143086 Got it for about $200, more than I wanted to spend however looks/feels nice and my stock wheel is a bit worn on the edges. I "assume" the horn/center part is the same between GT and SE but don't know for sure. If they are the same you can have my stock GT one, pay the shipping only since it is "well used". A deal between fellow Katoom riders LOL.

ktmrider Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 How did you mount that in your '05? That and I am still in Japan thru 9/4 so no install until then....

I prefer that wheel to the regular '05 wheel so I'm kinda interested how your install goes when you get back.
bluesuby Posted July 25, 2010 Posted July 25, 2010 Look for a "Wheelskin". Leather wrap for the wheel you sew yourself. I have one on my 1997 Miata and it shows no sign of wear. Two tips: Give yourself plenty of time and patience to do the sewing, and get yourself thin leather gloves (golf, weightlifter etc.) to pull the cord tight after every stitch.
subiedad51 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 The 08 wheel would fit in an 05 but you would need the 08 airbag as well. You could buy a Spec B wheel from the 06/07 and get the radio controls with it.
ktmrider Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Did it come with an airbag? I prefer that wheel to the regular '05 wheel so I'm kinda interested how your install goes when you get back. No airbag, just the outer hoop. Will post up some pics of the install once I return!

You could buy a Spec B wheel from the 06/07 and get the radio controls with it. From what I understand the 'hubs' are different (not sure if the spline count is different or not). I know the airbags are physically different, but I thought someone had tried an '08 wheel on an '05-07 before and it didn't work? I may be wrong though.
zmarko Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 No airbag, just the outer hoop. Will post up some pics of the install once I return! What are you going to do about the airbag then? Look for one in the states?
ktmrider Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 What are you going to do about the airbag then? Look for one in the states?I was planning to swap my USDM airbag and cruise stalk into the K2 wheel... Cursory glance/search says no problem but maybe I missed something?!? It's the main reason I got the LGT revA-C model, major language barrier at the UPGarage shop I bought from but they also seemed to think it would fit. They even asked me what MY/rev my car was before ringing it up.
BAC5.2 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 KTMRider - If you got the exact wheel in the link you posted, it won't fit. The cruise/radio/shift buttons won't fit the new wheel, and neither will the airbag. K2 does make a "first gen" BL/BP wheel though, which is a direct fit. None of this, of course, is applicable to the OP. BAC5.2 Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 I think he got it for "$200 more than he wanted to spend". That's a $750 wheel! If it's a true A-C rev wheel, it should be fine - but then ktmrider stated that it looks just like the STI model in the link...which would be a D-E rev wheel, which, indeed, will not fit properly. ktmrider Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 You and me both! But then I get confused easily. No guys the confusion was all me LOL. I did get the proper K2 Reiz LGT rev-A/C wheel, the 08+ STI link was a mistake on my part ( looks similar at first glance ). BTW I updated the link to an exact model. The OP ( so sorry for the major un-track there sir ) has a rev-D/F vehicle so my 05 hoop will not work w/o the airbag and other mods. I completely skipped over that tidbit in my excitement. I got the wheel for 20,000 yen ( a bit over $200 ). The "more than I wanted to spend" comment was vs a USDM Momo wheel which can be found used for around $100. But dang this wheel felt so good and the shop discounted it by 1/2 as it had been sitting for well over a year. Sooo like mentioned sorry for the thread jack, hopefully back on track now!
TSiWRX Posted July 27, 2010 Posted July 27, 2010 ^ There we go! That's better! Now that's a good find! Congrats! <-- I love Winky, my "periwinkle" (ABP) LGT! - Allen / Usual Suspect "DumboRAT" / One of the Three Stooges '16 Outback, '16 WRX, 7th Subaru Family
